'The Celebrated Hannah Cowley': Experiments in Dramatic Genre, 1776-1794. |
| |
Escott, Angela/ 9781848930803 |
| |
|
| |
Hannah Cowley (1743¡V1809) was a successful dramatist, and something of an eighteenth-century celebrity. In her heyday, Cowley¡¦s plays were put on across Europe and America, and the most celebrated actresses of the period ¡V Sarah Siddons, Dora Jordan, Mary Robinson ¡V all acted in them, as did fellow dramatist and actress Elizabeth Inchbald. She was even portrayed disparagingly by Charlotte Smith in two of her novels.
New critical interest in the drama of this period has meant a resurgence of interest in Cowley¡¦s writing and in the performance of her plays. This is the first substantial monograph study to examine Cowley¡¦s life and work. It examines her comedy ¡V the genre in which she made her name ¡V and traces the path of her experimentation with tragedy and alternative ¡¥illegitimate¡¦ forms. Escott questions how a woman was able to overcome the obstacles of her gender to use existing (and mould developing) genres for her purpose.

William Godwin and the Theatre. |
| |
O'Shaughnessy, David/ 9781848930490 |
| |
|
| |
William Godwin is one of the most important figures of the Romantic period. Interest in his life and works has grown in recent years, as has a concurrent interest in the theatre of the time. Godwin wrote four plays at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries: St Dunstan (1790), Antonio; or, The Soldier¡¦s Return (1800), Abbas, King of Persia (1801) and Faulkener (1807).
This book has two main objectives, the first being to provide the first comprehensive discussion of these four plays, situating them in their historical and political context, giving their publication and performance history where relevant and examining their relationship with Godwin's better known novels. The second, broader aim is to consider the notion of theatricality in relation to Godwin¡¦s political project. The theatrical culture of Britain in the 1790s was intrinsically linked to the political climate of the day, and Godwin¡¦s writing was affected by this to the degree that his plays, novels and philosophical writings can be seen as part of a continuous train of thought. In drama he saw possibilities for the dissemination of political justice unmatched by any other means of literary expression. This book shows that any assessment of Godwin's political or literary legacy should now acknowledge the importance of his sustained commitment to drama.

Theatre of Empire, The.: Frontier Performances in America, 1750-1860. |
| |
Harvey, Douglas S/ 9781848930278 |
| |
|
| |
Up to and following the War of Independence, the new American Republic expanded across the Appalachian mountains. To achieve this, the new nation embarked on a programme of ethnic cleansing and displacement of the indigenous population while relying heavily on slave labour. This was legitimized by the assumption of Anglo-Saxon supremacy. Harvey argues that all types of performance including traditional theatre, circuses and redface and blackface minstrelsy were used, both consciously and unconsciously, as a means of conforming public opinion to these aims. Often these forms of entertainment drew directly from the stock plays of the first British Empire, adapting them to meet new needs.
This study traces the translation of ideas of imperial and economic expansion from London, at the hub of the British Empire, to the great plains of America, and shows how forms of entertainment played a key role in shaping concepts of nationhood.

Acting Theory and the English Stage, 1700-1830, 5-Vols/Set. |

During the eighteenth century, treatises on the science of elocution, gesture and naturalness abounded. This five-volume facsimile edition draws together a representative selection of the most difficult-to-access texts from throughout the period.
The edition enables cultural historians to examine the place of stagecraft in the eighteenth-century imagination. What factors shaped the popular market for such writings? How did this burgeoning market affect the stage? In a culture of sympathy, what went into the construction of an identity where the gap between the bodily display of emotion and actual feeling was applauded? What was the relationship of these concepts to the rise of the sentimental novel? The arrangement of the texts enables readers to see eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century publications on acting as a crucial part of the period¡¦s cultural imagination.
Most of the texts included have never been republished and the rarest are taken from the only surviving copy. New editorial material includes a general introduction, headnotes, endnotes and a consolidated index.
This edition will appeal to scholars and students of Eighteenth-Century Studies, History of the Theatre, Cultural History and History of Print. |

There was a vast array of activity in American theatre during the twentieth century, when work produced in the United States reached the height of its significance and influence within the world repertoire.
Presenting an overview of criticism on the full range of twentieth-century American drama as well as a substantial anthology that reflects the changing critical perspectives that have been trained on the area, this extensive collection performs two much-needed functions. Covering a variety of themes from the battles over realism and expressionism at the beginning of the century, to the emergence of Freudian and myth criticism, the response to post-structural theory in the seventies and eighties, and the intense focus on issues of gender, sexual identity and ethnicity toward the end of the century, this is a fascinating and unique collection for both student and scholar alike. |

Transvestism and the Onnagata Traditions in Shakespeare and Kabuki. |
| |
Fujita, Minotu/ 9781901903317 |
| |
|
| |
It remains a remarkable coincidence that by the early seventeenth century, from opposite sides of the globe and virtually completely ignorant of each other's cultures, both the English stage of Shakespeare and the Japanese stage of Kabuki had evolved cross-dressing traditions - only one of which - Kabuki - has survived intact into the present day.
In this rich and varied collection of essays (12) by leading scholars from the USA, Europe and Japan, the history, culture and development of cross-gender casting in both traditions is explored from a variety of angles and points of view, thereby providing many new access points for further research, ongoing discussion and debate.
Contents include: 'Between the men and women: the Elizabethan gender system and the cross-dressed theatre' by Louis Montrose; 'The Onnagata and the female page: female impersonation and other topics in Shakespeare and Kabuki' by John Russell Brown; 'Performing gender: the construction of femininity in Shakespeare and Kabuki' and 'The staging of a Kabuki version of Hamlet' by Orita Koji. |

The overthrow of the 'gang of four' in October 1976 had profound effects in all areas of Chinese society, and probably nowhere can this be more clearly seen than in the performing arts. Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong's widow, was strongly interested in the performing arts and exercised great influence over them. This book describes her influence and the effects its removal had on the arts. Although the period covered is mainly that since the death of Mao, there is also considerable reference to the years following the Cultural Revolution. |
