SA17-517 Encyclopedia of Select Temples
  ShivSanjeevi Sripathi/ 9781774698709/ Price:US$ 180.00

Temples have been constructed by sages, kings and people to serve as a channel where one can experience the divinity that has been consecrated. When our phone batteries lose charge they go out-this requires us to charge them by connecting them to a source of power. They are then back in action. Our lives in today’s world and our karma makes us also lose our aim, mood or in other words our “battery” goes out. Temples and mantras then serve as the sources of power-in this case what we call as Shakti that can be seen as Ganesha or Shiva or Devi or Vishnu or Hanuman. Such temples also are centers of art, culture and economic growth sustaining the material and spiritual life of people. This book would be a compilation of sacred geometries and temple centers-a brief snapshot of the architecture, history and science of the spots. The temples will be given as per the directions: north, south, east and west with the temples grouped under each direction. The aim is to enable any seeker/traveler to gain access to select well-known and relatively lesser-known temples in India along with valid pointers. This will be the first such book presenting this data in this format.

SA17-507 Nicholas of Cusa on the Trinitarian Structure of the Innate Criterion of Truth
  Paula Pico Estrada/ 9789004412507/ Price:EUR 99.00

Book Cover In Nicholas of Cusa on the Trinitarian Structure of the Innate Criterion of Truth, Paula Pico Estrada offers an analysis of Nicholas of Cusa’s (1401–1464) unitrine conception of the human power of judgment, arguing that the innate criterion that guides human beings to their end is formed by a cognitive, an affective and a social dimension, and that it not only makes possible the systematization and evaluation of cognitive experience but also enables morality. Based on a close reading of Cusanus’ philosophical treatises, the study deepens our understanding of Nicholas of Cusa’s epistemology, showing that his anthropological conception integrates philosophy and theology.

  Yang Hongfan/ 9789004499577/ Price:EUR 120.00

Its dynamic exploration reveals the tension between localized and global forms of Catholic rituals, especially the tension faced by missionaries and Chinese Catholics, who were caught up between the Chinese tradition and the Catholic one. Drawing on rich primary sources, some of which are rarely noticed in the field, this book unfolds the intriguing interactions between the Mass and various cultural expressions of Chinese society, including traditional religion, architecture, art, literature, government, and theology.

John within Judaism: Religion, Ethnicity, and the Shaping of Jesus-Oriented Jewishness in the Fourth Gospel
  Wally V. Cirafesi/ 9789004462939/ Price:EUR 116.00

Book Cover In John within Judaism, Wally V. Cirafesi offers a reading of the Gospel of John as an expression of the fluid and flexible nature of Jewish identity in Greco-Roman antiquity. While many have noted John’s general Jewishness, few have given it a seat at the ideologically congested table of ancient Jewish practice and belief. By interrogating the concept of “Judaism” in relation to the complex categories of “religion” and “ethnicity,” Cirafesi argues that John negotiates Jewishness using strategies of ethnic identity formation paralleled in other Jewish sources from the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods. In this process of negotiation, including its use of “high christology” and critique of Ioudaioi, John coalesces with other expressions of ancient Jewish identity and, thus, can be read “within Judaism.”

SA17-507 Morality in the Marketplace: Reconciling Theology and Economics
  Paul van Geest/ 9789004501744/ Price:EUR 49.00

Book Cover What does Keynes have to do with Qohelet? At first sight, economy and theology seem to be disciplines with mutually exclusive objectives. Yet, as the Covid crisis has recently shown, if economic development is to really stand a chance of success, it should go hand in hand with relational values like honesty, reliability and empathy: this will contribute to a society with a culture of reciprocity, respect, love and trust. In this essay, Paul van Geest pleads for a renewal of the old ties between economics and theology as scientific disciplines, so as to arrive at a deeper and richer anthropological fundament for economic research.

SA17-507 Sino-Tibetan Buddhism across the Ages
  Ester Bianchi/ 9789004467958/ Price:EUR 130.00

Spanning from pre-modern encounters in Central Asia to contemporary forms of Sino-Tibetan hybridity in Chinese-speaking environments, Sino-Tibetan Buddhism Across the Ages produces further evidence that, beginning with the very introduction of Buddhism into Tibet, there were constant and fruitful contacts and blending between the Buddhist traditions developing in China and those of Tibet.

SA17-507 Religious Narratives in Contemporary Culture: Between Cultural Memory and Transmediality
  Maria-Sabina Draga Alexandru/ 9789004453746/ Price:EUR 124.00

Book Cover Religious Narratives in Contemporary Culture: Between Cultural Memory and Transmediality analyses the meaning and role of religion in western cultural practices in the twenty-first century. This inquiry situates itself at the intersection between cultural memory studies and the transmedial study of narrative and art. Contributors focus on genres which have yet to receive significant critical attention within the field, including speculative fiction films and television series, autobiographical prose and poetry, and action-adventure video games. In this time of crisis, where traces of religious thinking still persist in the presence or absence of religious faith, this volume’s collective look into some of their cultural embodiments is necessary and timely. The volume is addressed primarily to scholars and students interested in intersections between religious and cultural studies, revisions of traditional religious narratives, literature as a space of reflection on today's world, contemporary media studies and remediation.

SA17-507 China in a Secular Age: Coping with the Legacy of a Religious State
  Andre Laliberte/ 9789004498556/ Price:EUR 70.00

Book Cover Is China truly a secular state? Andre Laliberte puts this widely held perception to the test, arguing that we must first broaden our definitions if we are to comprehend fully the religious nature of the Chinese state. From there, Laliberte presents the long tradition of Chinese statecraft, which has involved different forms of intermingling between religion and state, and describes how the Communist Party perpetuates this institutional intertwinement despite its materialist philosophy. He then explores the variety of forms in which societies with a Chinese heritage outside of the People’s Republic of China are moving beyond this mutual entanglement between religion and state.

SA17-507 The Rule of Christ: Themes in the Theology of James Nayler
  Stuart Masters/ 9789004468726/ Price:EUR 70.00

Book Cover During the 1650s, James Nayler was one of the most important leaders of the emerging Quaker movement in England and, arguably, its most effective preacher and writer. However, his legacy has been dominated by events that took place in the summer and autumn of 1656, leading to a conviction for blasphemy, brutal public punishment, and imprisonment. Official histories of Quaker beginnings portrayed him as a gifted, but flawed, character, who brought the Quaker movement into disrepute, and prompted a concern for corporate order. Scholarship during the past century has begun to question this received position. However, a continued preoccupation with his ‘fall’ has tended to overshadow interpretations of his writings. In this volume, Stuart Masters seeks to identify a number of important theological themes visible within Nayler’s works, and to locate them within their radical religious context. He argues that a powerful Christological vision at the heart of Nayler’s religious thought engendered a practical theology with radical political, economic, and ecological implications.

SA17-507 Through Your Eyes: Religious Alterity and the Early Modern Western Imagination
  Giovanni Tarantino/ 9789004464919/ Price:EUR 165.00

Book Cover The focus of Through Your Eyes: Religious Alterity and the Early Modern Western Imagination is the (mostly Western) understanding, representation and self-critical appropriation of the "religious other" between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Mutually constitutive processes of selfing/othering are observed through the lenses of creedal Jews, a bhakti Brahmin, a widely translated Morisco historian, a collector of Western and Eastern singularia, Christian missionaries in Asia, critical converts, toleration theorists, and freethinkers: in other words, people dwelling in an 'in-between' space which undermines any binary conception of the Self and the Other. The genesis of the volume was in exchanges between eight international scholars and the two editors, intellectual historian Giovanni Tarantino and anthropologist Paola von Wyss-Giacosa, who share an interest in comparatism, debates over toleration, and history of emotions.

New Testament Semiotics: Linguistic Signs, the Process of Signification, and the Hermeneutics of Discursive Resistance
  Timo Eskola/ 9789004465756/ Price:EUR 157.00

Book Cover Focusing on linguistic signs, New Testament Semiotics navigates through different realist and nominalist traditions. From this perspective, Saussures and Peirces traditions exhibit similarities. Questioning Derridas and Ecos semiotics based on their misuse of Peirces innovations, Dr. Privatdozent Timo Eskola rehabilitates Benveniste and Ricoeur. A sign is about conditions and functions. Sign as a role is a manifestation of participation. Serving as a sign entails participation in a web of relations, participation in a network of meanings, and adoption of a set of rules. We should focus on sentences and networks, not primitive reference or binary oppositions. Enunciations are postulations producing evanescent meanings. Finally, the study suggests a linguistic approach to metatheology that is based on hermeneutics of discursive resistance.

The Reception of Exodus Motifs in Jewish and Christian Literature: "Let My People Go!"
  Beate Kowalski/ 9789004471115/ Price:EUR 149.00

Book Cover The account of the exodus of the Israelite slaves from Egypt under Moses has shaped the theology and community identity of both Jews and Christians across the centuries. Its reception in later scriptures and religious writings, as well as in art and music, continues to inspire liberation movements across the globe. This volume brings together an international group of scholars to explore the re-use of the exodus narratives across a wide range of early Jewish and Christian literature including the Apocrypha and the New Testament. The contributors engage with wider questions of methodology and the impact of social and cultural context on biblical interpretation.

VA17-119 Implications of an Evolved Christianity in the Modern World
  James Patrick Byrnes/ 9781799854524/ Price:US$ 215.00

Book Cover Evolved Christianity represents something of a middle ground between the “nothing should be retained” and “everything should be retained” positions typically held by those researching the religion. There is a need for a new and improved form of Christianity based on careful consideration of the results of several kinds of research and the application of critical thinking to both apologetic and revisionist arguments that have been advanced over many years. Implications of an Evolved Christianity in the Modern World is a cutting-edge research publication that examines the essence of Christianity and its role in the world as well as a comprehensive evaluation of traditional Christian principles in the context of modern society. The book uses a critical thinking and research approach to decide which of the core principles of the traditional Christian paradigm should be retained, which should be revised, and which should be eliminated, thus resulting in the Evolved Christian paradigm. The book then details a few of the implications that embracing such a paradigm could entail. Featuring a wide range of topics such as biblical studies, evolutionary theory, and psychology, this book is ideal for researchers, religious leaders, sociologists, theologians, academicians, policymakers, and students. Topics Covered The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to: •Biblical Studies •Christian Life •Evolutionary Theory •Faith •Figurative Language •Inclusivity •Liturgy •Mammon •Poverty •Psychology •Refugee Crisis •Religious Studies •Ritual

  Kai Sheng/ 9789004431522/ Price:EUR 165.00

Book Cover The goal of this book is to study the ways in which Chinese Buddhists expressed their religious faiths and how Chinese Buddhists interacted with society at large since the Northern and Southern dynasties (386-589), through the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911), up to the Republican era (1912-1949). SA17-495 Parables in Changing Contexts: Essays on the Study of Parables in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism
  Marcel Poorthuis/ 9789004416963/ Price:EUR 131.00

Book Cover In Parables in Changing Contexts, new venues in the comparative study of parables are addressed by scholars of Judaism, New Testament, Buddhism and Islam. Essays cover parables in the synoptic Gospels, Rabbinic midrash, and parabolic tales and fables in the Babylonian Talmud. Three essays address parables in Islam and Buddhism. The volume shows how parables are suitably adapted in terms of form and rhetoric to enhance religious identity formation. Parables serve as media, as sensational forms making the sacred present, albeit encoded or riddled, in all cases invoking the listener’s active interpretative participation and cultural imagination. Adapting a multidisciplinary approach to these gems of storytelling, parables in a particular way provide new insights in the cultures that produced them

SA17-495 Conjectures and Controversy in the Study of Fundamentalism
  W. Paul Williamson/ 9789004427747/ Price:EUR 96.00

Book Cover In Conjectures and Controversy in the Study of Fundamentalism, W. Paul Williamson takes a critical look at the sociohistorical emergence of fundamentalism and examines how historians constructed popular, though questionable, conceptions of the movement that have dominated decades of empirical research in psychology. He further analyzes the notions of militancy and anti-modernity as valid characterizations of fundamentalism and examines whether fundamentalism, as a Christian Protestant phenomenon, is useful in labelling global forms of religious extremism and violence. In observing the lack of theory-driven research, the publication offers theories that situate fundamentalism as a social psychological phenomenon as opposed to some personal predisposition. Students and scholars of fundamentalism will discover Conjectures and Controversy in the Study of Fundamentalism to be a provocative study on the topic.

SA17-495 Religious Diversity in Asia
  Jorn Borup/ 9789004415799/ Price:EUR 170.00

This anthology explores representations and managements of religious diversity in Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and diaspora religions originating in these countries, seen through the lenses of history, identity, state, ritual and geography. In addition to presenting empirical cases, the chapters also address theoretical and methodological reflections using Asia as a laboratory for further comparative research of the relevance and use of 'religious diversity'.

SA17-495 The Theosis of the Body of Christ: From the Early British Apostolics to a Pentecostal Trinitarian Ecclesiology
  Jonathan Black/ 9789004412224/ Price:EUR 57.00

Book Cover In The Theosis of the Body of Christ: From the early British Apostolics to a Pentecostal Trinitarian Ecclesiology Jonathan Black builds on the ecclesiology of one of the UK’s original Pentecostal movements, the Apostolic Church, demonstrating the connection between ecclesiology and the Pentecostal distinctive of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. These early British Pentecostals were not naive fundamentalists with the addition of a few Pentecostal distinctives, but rather engaged in significant theological reflexion, rooted in Trinitarian theology, resulting in a theology of theosis which resonates in many ways with the Great Tradition, yet is held together with a forensic/Reformation approach to justification. This approach then opens new possibilities in understanding the theological nature of the Pentecostal baptism in the Spirit.

SA17-495 Pentecostal Theology and Ecumenical Theology: Interpretations and Intersections
  Peter Hocken/ 9789004408364/ Price:EUR 67.00

Pentecostal Theology and Ecumenical Theology: Interpretations, Intersections, and Inspirations brings together globally recognized and newer scholars to address the complex relationship between Pentecostalism and the Ecumenical Movement. Historical essays address topics such as early Pentecostal responses to and participation in ecumenism, explicit convergences between Pentecostal and ecumenical initiatives, and the particular contributions of Pentecostals and ecumenists outside North America and Europe. Constructive theological essays address intersections between ecumenical theology and systematic loci in Pentecostal perspective, in the hope that mutual exchange and criticism will lead to ways to improve both. Never before have this many scholars of Pentecostalism combined their efforts in order to focus on the relationship between Pentecostal theology and ecumenical theology past, present, and future.

SA17-495 Global Religious and Secular Dynamics: The Modern System of Classification
  Jose Casanova/ 9789004411975/ Price:EUR 70.00

Book Cover Global Religious and Secular Dynamics offers a global historical perspective that integrates European theories of modern secularization and competing theories of global religious revival as interrelated dynamics. In the first section Casanova examines the emergence of the modern religious/secular binary system of classification within a critical review of Emile Durkheim’s and Max Weber’s divergent theories of religion. The modern system of classification is contrasted with the pre-axial one, in which all reality was organized according to the binary sacred/profane, and with the post-axial one, which was organized according to the binary transcendent/immanent. The second and third sections contrast the internal European road of secularization without religious pluralization with the external colonial road of global intercultural and religious encounters, particularly in Asia, that led to the global system of religious pluralism. The final section examines the contemporary intertwinement of religious and secular dynamics through the globalization of the immanent frame and the expansion of global denominationalism.

SA17-495 Buddhist Apologetics in East Asia: Countering the Neo-Confucian Critiques in the Hufa lun and the Yusok chirui non
  Uri Kaplan/ 9789004405332/ Price:EUR 128.00

Book Cover While the Neo-Confucian critique of Buddhism is fairly well-known, little attention has been given to the Buddhist reactions to this harangue. The fact is, however, that over a dozen apologetic essays have been written by Buddhists in China, Korea, and Japan in response to the Neo-Confucians. Buddhist Apologetics in East Asia offers an introduction to this Buddhist literary genre. It centers on full translations of two dominant apologetic works—the Hufa lun (護法論), written by a Buddhist politician in twelfth-century China, and the Yus?k chir?i non (儒釋質疑論), authored by an anonymous monk in fifteenth-century Korea. Put together, these two texts demonstrate the wide variety of polemical strategies and the cross-national intertextuality of East Asian Buddhist apologetics.

SA17-495 The Ethics of The Tripartite Tractate (NHC I, 5): A Study of Determinism and Early Christian Philosophy of Ethics
  Paul Linjamaa/ 9789004407756/ Price:EUR 136.00

Book Cover In The Ethics of The Tripartite Tractate (NHC I, 5) Paul Linjamaa offers the first full length thematical monograph on the longest Valentinian text extant today. By investigating the ethics of The Tripartite Tractate, this study offers in-depth exploration of the text's ontology, epistemology, theory of will, and passions, as well as the anthropology and social setting of the text. Valentinians have often been associated with determinism, which has been presented as “Gnostic” and then not taken seriously, or been disregarded as an invention of ancient intra-Christian polemics. Linjamaa challenges this conception and presents insights into how early Christian determinism actually worked, and how it effectively sustained viable and functioning ethics.

SA17-495 Ethics in the Gospel of John: Discipleship as Moral Progress
  Sookgoo Shin/ 9789004387416/ Price:EUR 113.00

Book Cover In Ethics in the Gospel of John Sookgoo Shin seeks to challenge the dominant scholarly view of John’s ethics as an ineffective and unhelpful companion for moral formation. In order to demonstrate the relevance of John’s ethics, Shin argues that the development of discipleship in John’s Gospel should be understood as moral progress, which was a well-known moral concept in the ancient Mediterranean world. Having drawn an ethical model from the writings of Plutarch, this study aims to identify the undergirding ethical dynamic that shapes John’s moral structure by bringing out the implicit ethical elements that are embedded throughout John’s narratives, and thus suggests a way to read the whole Gospel ethically and appreciatively of its literary characteristics.

SA17-495 Paradigm Shifts in Early and Modern Chinese Religion: A History
  John Lagerwey/ 9789004385764/ Price:EUR 52.00

It shows how, in the Chinese church-state, elite processes of rationalization, interiorization, and secularization are at work in every period of major change and how popular religion gradually emerges to a position of dominance by means of a long history of at once resisting, adapting to, and collaborating with elite-driven change. Topics covered include ritual, scripture, philosophy, state policy, medicine, sacred geography, gender, and the economy. It also serves as the basis for an on-line Coursera course.

SA17-495 Diamond Sutra Narratives: Textual Production and Lay Religiosity in Medieval China
  Chiew Hui Ho/ 9789004405486/ Price:EUR 136.00

Book Cover Contextualizing the sutra within a milieu of intense religious and cultural experimentation, this volume unravels the sudden rise of Diamond Sutra devotion in the Tang dynasty against the backdrop of a range of social, political, and literary activities. Through the translation and exploration of a substantial body of narratives extolling the efficacy of the sutra, it explores the complex social history of lay Buddhism by focusing on how the laity might have conceived of the sutra and devoted themselves to it. Corroborated by various sources, it reveals the cult’s effect on medieval Chinese religiosity in the activities of an empowered laity, who modified and produced parasutraic texts, prompting the monastic establishment to accommodate to the changes they brought about.

  Meer, Nasar/ 9781138930827/ Price:GBP 1050.00

Book Cover The relationship between Islam and modernity has generated and rich but complex literature. While competing accounts sometimes appear incommensurable, there is at least some convergence on the view that Islam and modernity reflect an unsettled encounter. For some this is self-evident because the relationship rests on contested foundational questions, not least: whose modernity and which Islam? For others it is a less a theoretical and more a historical issue, in so far as there has been a process underway in which Islam has proved slow in ‘catching up’. This Major Work gives space to an evolving conversation between Islam and four component parts of modernity. It has a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. Volume 1: Islam and Secularism Volume 2: Islam and Postcolonialism Volume 3: Islam and Identities Volume 4: Islam and Innovation

Iosif Volotskii And Eastern Christianity: Essays Across Seventeen Centuries
  David Goldfrank/ 9780998147734/ Price:US$ 36.00

Book Cover September 9, 2015, marked the 500th anniversary of the passing of one of the most commanding and remarkable figures in Russian history, Iosif Volotskii. It was in his honor that our Association for the Study of Eastern Christian History and Culture held its biennial conference in March 2013, where the first drafts of this volume’s essays were presented. Steeped in traditions and sacred writings, Iosif would probably have approved of the subject matter of our first section that looks at early Eastern Church history. And as a passionate and engaged activist, he likely would have been curious about our middle section devoted to him and how some of his interests played out in early modern Russia in places where religion remained paramount, though our unavoidable secular approach would have left him cold. How he or any other zealous late medieval abbot, teacher, and father confessor would have related to the issues of our third section on our modern, technologically explosive era is impossible to fathom, except, probably to remind us, as he did his monks, of such timeless wisdom as “it is a great calamity where laws and canons do not dwell.”

Christianity In Eurafrica: A History of the Church in Europe and Africa
  Steven Paas/ 9780998147727/ Price:US$ 38.00

Book Cover This textbook for learners and teachers of the History of the Church focuses on the West and the South, on Europe and Africa, the continents whose histories have been increasingly intertwined since Antiquity. Since the 1960s, the classical dependence of the South on the North has changed dramatically. There is a clear shift in the centre of gravity of Christianity from the north to the south Atlantic, making African Christianity increasingly important. The future of European Christianity largely depends on a much-needed shift to mission-mindedness in the African churches. Christianity in Eurafrica is an impressive book, meticulously researched and well written by a professional scholar. The first chapter includes some valuable historiographical guidelines for writing and understanding the History of the Church. In its first part, the book traces the history of the Church in the Middle East and Europe, explaining the roots of theological diversity to this day. In the second part, the author narrates how the Faith moved south, took root in African soil and grew independently. Many pictures and illustrations serve to further enliven the account. Steven Paas, taught Theology in Malawi for many years. He writes from a deep knowledge of and love for the Lord’s Church, especially in Africa and Europe.

VA17-107 Muslim-Christian Encounters, 4-Vols/Set.
  Siddiqui, Mona/ 9781138937918/ Price:GBP 1050.00

Book Cover While the subject of Christian-Muslim or Muslim-Christian interaction is still not a traditional or systematic discipline, interest in the encounter of these two religions has grown considerably over the last decade. Historians, including historians of Islam and Christianity have always been interested in the civilizational meeting of the two religions, in conflict or in times of peace. This includes aspects of post-colonial studies, which incorporate cultural, literary and political writings which consider the intellectual and social ruptures in so much of the Islamic world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Theologians however have only recently begin to appreciate the amount of material which illustrates the extent to which Christians and Muslims wrote about one another’s faith and spoke of each other in a variety of contexts in both polemical and eirenic terms. These resources serve to enrich the understanding of one’s own faith and the changing historical relationship with the other. Today, Muslim-Christian is often understood as Islam/West where the Christianity and secularism are either conflated or Christianity subsumed within the larger cultural framework of the west. Either way, Islam is a foreign presence and its points of reference not easily assimilated in the narrative of a Judaeo-Christian West. Nevertheless this has created an interesting intellectual and scholarly dynamic in a wide range of disciplines. This includes ethics, politics, gender studies and the emergence of an `interfaith’ literature which is increasingly used in scholarly as well as grass roots settings. The collection will comprise around sixty pre-published journal articles and some book chapters. Each volume will contain around 15 articles/chapters. The articles will be secondary sources analysing the works of individual Christian and Muslim scholars, so will not be extracts of primary material thought it is hoped that the majority will contain some primary material.

VA17-104 Religion, the Occult, and the Paranormal, 4-Vols/Set.
  Cusack, Carole M./ 9781138015098/ Price:GBP 1050.00

The field encompassed by ‘Religion, the Occult, and the Paranormal’ is both fascinating and frustrating. The fascination stems from the contested nature of the content, and the multi-disciplinary nature of the existing scholarly literature. The frustration stems chiefly from the misunderstood and much-maligned nature of the content, and the way in which specific elements are taken out of context, or treated in a frivolous manner as is often the case with tabloid journalism. This new collection from Routledge addresses these and other urgent questions by bringing together the best foundational and cutting-edge scholarship on religion, the occult, and the paranormal.

VA17-103 Comparative Religious Ethics, 4-Vols/Set.
  Mathewes, Charles/ 9780415684484/ Price:GBP 975.00

No collection of this sort has yet been conceived of, let alone accomplished, in this field. In part that may well be due to the extraordinarily nascent character of the field of comparative religious ethics, described as that (as opposed to Christian ethics, for example). Yet the aim is not simply to gather together a number of pieces, but -- with the appropriate modesty and tentativeness -- to offer one picture of how the field ought to understand itself: its past, present, and perhaps its future. A critical mass of scholars has now emerged in this area, and the institutional dynamics of religious studies departments, which are increasingly seeing the attractions of classes in "comparative ethics," are favorable as well. By gathering together both "classic" statements, exemplifying paradigmatic approaches in the field, and recent, ground-breaking and innovative works, the ambition is to make this collection the gold standard for anyone working on the field of comparative religious ethics in coming decades.

VA17-102 Muhammad, 4-Vols/Set.
  Goerke, Andreas/ 9781138791275/ Price:GBP 1050.00

Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, is undoubtebly one of the most influential persons in history. He is not only the founder of one of the world religions, but has served as a role model for Muslims throughout history. The records of his deeds and sayings are among the most important sources in various fields of Islamic learning, such as Islamic law, ritual, piety, Sufism, or political theory. Muhammad has been a main object of research in Western scholarship on Islam, and there is a huge amount of articles and books devoted to various aspects of his life, the sources of his life and his role in Islamic tradition. These articles, however, are widely dispersed; some can be found in more popular journals and books, others in smaller, less readily available publications. It is therefore reasonable to bring together the most important articles and book chapters on Muhammad in a four volume set.

VA17-96 Sects, Cults and New Religions, 4-Vols/Set.
  Cusack, Carole/ 9780415320290/ Price:GBP 875.00

New Religious Movements (NRMs) came into being as a distinct subfield of academic study in the 1970s in response to the explosion of non-traditional religions that took place in the waning years of the Sixties counterculture. (The designation ‘New Religion’ is a direct translation of a Japanese term coined for the many new religions that emerged in the wake of the Second World War, and was adopted by Western scholars in the late Sixties/early Seventies in preference to the pejorative term ‘cult’.) These movements, and those termed ‘sects’ and ‘cults’, initially attracted the attention of American and European sociologists of religion because of the controversy that arose in response to their expansion. Religious Studies, which at the time was still in the process of establishing itself as a legitimate discipline distinct from Theology and traditional Biblical Studies, was only too happy to leave NRMs to Sociology. This situation gradually changed, however, so that at present at least as many scholars of NRMs come from Religious Studies backgrounds as come from the social sciences. The collection consists of four volumes which together provide a one-stop source for crucial information on—and theoretical/methodological approaches to—contemporary New Religions. The set brings together thinking on a wide variety of themes associated with NRMs (e.g. apocalypticism, typologies, conversion, gender) and major works on the NRMs that have attracted the most scholarly attention (e.g. the ‘Moonies’, The Family International, Osho Rajneesh). Some influential ‘anti-cult’ articles (normally not considered part of mainstream scholarship) have also been included as well. Sects, Cults, and New Religions is fully indexed and includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, and is destined to be valued as a vital research resource.

In today's globalized world, religious diversity has become one of the strongest challenges to the self-understanding of any major religious tradition, provoking two interdependent questions. How does it see itself in the light of others? And, how does it see others in the light of its own teachings? While the Abrahamic religions are often accused of a predominantly intolerant and exclusivistic attitude to the religious 'other', Eastern religions-and Buddhism in particular-enjoy the reputation of being naturally tolerant, absorbing, and even pluralistic towards competing faiths. Some thinkers (from David Hume to Jan Assmann) understood religious intolerance as an inevitable property of monotheism, supposedly absent in the case of non-theistic or polytheistic religions. More recent research, however, has suggested that this impression, part of a whole cluster of Western clich?s, is false. Buddhism is-and has been-as much convinced of its own superiority as any other faith, and has also been involved in various inter-religious tensions and violent conflicts. The ways, however, in which Buddhists have thought about the religious 'other', and practically dealt with it, display peculiar features, which do indeed differ profoundly from what we find in the Abrahamic faiths. Yet today, Buddhism must address the question whether it can arrive at a genuine appreciation of religious diversity, and recognize other religions as different but nevertheless equally valid. This new four-volume collection from Routledge's acclaimed Critical Concepts in Religious Studies series enables users to make sense of this and other dizzying questions. It brings together the best thinking on Buddhism's relationship with other faiths and provides a one-stop collection of classic and contemporary contributions to facilitate ready access to the most influential and important scholarship.

VA17-93 Spirituality in the Modern World, 4-Vols/Set.
  Heelas, Paul/ 9780415490290/ Price:GBP 1000.00

It would not be an exaggeration to say that during the last century, most especially during and since the 1960s, the language of spirituality has become one of the most significant ways in which the sacred has come to be understood and judged in the West, and, increasingly, elsewhere. Whether it is true that 'spirituality' has eclipsed 'religion' in Western settings remains debatable. What is incontestable is that the language of spirituality, together with practices (most noticeably spiritual, complementary, and alternative medicine), has become a major feature of the sacred dimensions of contemporary modernity. Equally incontestably, spirituality is a growing force in all those developing countries where its presence is increasingly felt among the cosmopolitan elite, and where spiritual forms of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine are thriving. This new four-volume Major Work collection from Routledge provides a coherent compilation of landmark texts which cannot be ignored by those intent on making sense of what is happening to the sacred as spirituality-more exactly what is taken to be spirituality-develops as an increasingly important lingua franca, series of practices, and as a humanistic ethicality.

VA17-92 Japanese Religions, 4-Vols/Set.
  Dolce, Lucia/ 9781849200332/ Price:GBP 675.00

Book Cover This set, as a collection of representative studies on Japanese Religions, illustrates the diversity and complexity of the Japanese religious experience, past and contemporary, while at the same time offering an overview of the most updated research in the field. The themes selected promote avenues of analysis that place the religious phenomenon in its socio-historical and cultural context. The selection demonstrates the range of religious practices and the contexts in which these practices are performed, with the aim of counterbalancing the traditional foci on either theological (doctrinal) studies or ethnographic studies only. This collection affords a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the nature and practice of Japanese religiosity. The framework in which the material is presented also offers an alternative to the usual chronological organization of works on Japanese religions, and to traditional arrangements of works on East Asian religions in general according to the categories of Buddhism, Confucianism, Shinto and Christianity. Although these traditional approaches are covered in the first volume, the set as a whole stresses the practice of religion, which stretches across traditions and denominations, and the pre-modern/modern divide.

  Lehmann, David/ 9780415556156/ Price:GBP 1400.00

Book Cover The term ‘fundamentalism’ carries a wide range of meanings, some of them pejorative. Here it is used to refer to what the French call ‘integrism’, meaning a religious code which encompasses and governs with its prescriptions the entire private and public life of individuals and the collectivity. The prime examples in the contemporary world are Muslim renewal; Christian evangelical and charismatic churches, sects, and tendencies; and Ultra-Orthodox Judaism. VA17-89 Religion and Globalization, 4-Vols/Set.
  Altglas, Veronique/ 9780415550321/ Price:GBP 950.00

Because space and identities are reformulated by religions as they break through geographic and cultural boundaries, religion is now widely recognized as 'the great globalizer'. In particular, as they become transnational, religions adapt to new social contexts and interact with other cultures, transforming themselves and their cultural environment. Furthermore, religions and their adherents are extremely responsive to globalization, whether they perceive it as threatening their particular identity or as an opportunity to provide a universal message to the world and become a 'global religion'. This new four-volume collection from Routledge brings together all the key texts on globalization and religion in one easy-to-use 'mini library'. Each of the volumes articulates theoretical and empirical perspectives: while theories attempt to grasp the nature of the relations between globalization and religion, a diversity of case studies shed light on the importance of religion in the making of contemporary global situations. The first volume brings together the best scholarship on religion and space in its global context. Volume II entitled 'Westernization of Religion and its Counter-Trends' looks at the debates surrounding the westernization of religion including the transnational diffusion and local expressions of Christianity and counter-trends to the westernization of religion. Volume III features articles concerning the theories and case-studies on the religious responses to globalization. The final volume looks at the new challenges, epistemological and transnational faced by religion and politics in their global context.

VA17-84 Religion and Science, 4-Vols/Set.
  Harding, Sara Fletcher/ 9780415549028/ Price:GBP 290.00

Integral to human nature is the need to seek understanding of the world in which we live, to discover how it works and why. We find our answers to these fundamental questions through different methods; empirical science justifies our observations of the natural world, but religion offers explanations to its meaning and purpose. On the surface of it the encounter between reason and faith, the mind and spirit, have the appearance of polarity, in reality there is fluidity between the two. It is a dynamic and constantly changing relationship, and for that reason it is an important and thriving academic area that needs careful and intentional study. This new collection answers that need with scholarship brought together in four volumes. Taking the combined experience of Sara Fletcher Harding and Nancy Morvillo, experts in religion and science respectively, this new Routledge Major Work presents an abundance of the very best cutting-edge scholarship that has been written about this fragile relationship. Volume I of this collection is focused on 'Histories and Methodologies in Science and Religion' and Volume II on 'Cosmological Considerations in Science and Religion'. Volume III is entitled 'The Imperative of Evolution in Science' and finally Volume IV brings together the best scholarship on 'Religion Human Actions at the Intersection of Science and Religion'. With individual introductions for each volume placing the collected material into its relevant intellectual and historical context and a full index, this is an accessible and thorough reference resource. Volume I: Histories and Methodologies in Science and Religion Volume II: Cosmological Considerations in Science and Religion Volume III: The Imperative of Evolution in Science and Religion Volume IV: Human Actions at the Intersection of Science and Religion

VA17-82 Anthropology of Religion, 4-Vols/Set.
  Phillips Stevens Jr./ 9780415494236/ Price:GBP 1000.00

Religious belief is an extremely powerful motivator of human behaviour. Religious considerations permeate and influence all parts of a culture. Religious systems are universal in human cultures, around the world and through all stages of human history and prehistory. Of all academic approaches to religion, the anthropological approach is the most comprehensive and the most useful to students of human belief and behaviour, because it examines religion as a cultural system that cannot fully be understood separated from the other systems with which it interacts. This new four-volume collection from Routledge assembles exemplary scholarship in the field from its Victorian beginnings to the present, and represents all generally accepted categories of religious belief and ritual, plus some new ones. Topics covered include: 'Early Explorations'; 'Symbols'; 'Supernatural Beings'; 'Magical Power and Forces'; 'Human Agents of Supernatural Danger'; 'Myth'; 'Ritual'; 'Religious Practitioners'; 'Women and Gender'; 'Belief'; 'Ecology'; 'Mind and Body-Neurobiological Bases'; and 'Religion in Socio-Cultural Change'. The first volume is prefaced with a general introduction newly written by the editor which outlines the history and salient aspects of the anthropological concern for religion, and introduces the specific sections of the work. Each thematic part also includes a short introduction to set the gathered materials in context. Anthropology of Religion is destined to be valued by scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners as an essential one-stop reference.

VA17-81 Religion and the Environment, 4-Vols/Set.
  Gottlieb, Roger S/ 9780415554510/ Price:GBP 1300.00

In the last two decades a new form of religiously motivated social action and a virtually new field of academic study-each based in recognition of the connections between religion and humanity's treatment of the environment-have developed. Interactions between religion and environmental concern have been manifest in the explosive growth of ecotheological writings, institutional commitment by organized religions, and environmental activism explicitly oriented to religious ideals. Clergy throughout the world in virtually every denomination have received word from leaders of their religion that the environment-no less than sexuality, poverty, or war and peace-is now a basic and compelling religious matter. Out of this confrontation have been born vital new theologies based in the recovery of marginalized elements of tradition, profound criticisms of the past, and ecologically oriented visions of God, the Sacred, the Earth, and human beings. Theologians from every religious tradition-along with dozens of non-denominational spiritual writers-have confronted world religions' past attitudes towards nature. In the realm of institutional commitment, public statements and actions by organized religions have grown dramatically. In the context of political action, throughout the U.S. and the world religiously oriented groups take part in environmentally oriented political action: from lobbying and consciousness raising to activist demonstrations and civil disobedience. This collection serves as a comprehensive introduction, overview, and in-depth account of these exciting new developments. The four volumes cover virtually every aspect of the field-from theological change and institutional commitment to innovation in liturgy, from new ecumenical connections among different religions and between religion, science and environmental movements, from religious participation in environmental politics to an account of the global social and political contexts in which religious environmentalism has unfolded.

VA17-79 New Testament Studies, 4-Vols/set.
  Foster, Paul/ 9781848601680/ Price:GBP 675.00

New Testament Studies offers a unified approach and a selection of excellent articles that is in no way constrained by theological positions. The aim of this four-volume set is to provide a rich teaching and learning resource which generates a real knowledge transfer based on the best recent New Testament scholarship. Volume One covers two areas, issues of methodology and recent advances in historical Jesus research. The former area both lays the basic groundwork for engaging in the study of the ancient texts that form the New Testament, but also collects together some of the more creative reading strategies that have been applied to New Testament texts over the last few decades. Further, research into the central figure of the New Testament has a long history, and there has been renewed interest and fresh advances in this area over the last twenty years that have reshaped the questions that are being explored. Volume TwoI looks specifically at the four canonical Gospels. The volume opens with articles that deal with general issues such as questions of genre, audience and purpose before presenting articles that deal with the individual texts. Also the recent application of social-memory theory to Gospel texts will be highlighted. Volume Three perhaps covers the topic that has seen the greatest amount of literature published during the last three decades - the person and letters of Paul the apostle. Three central areas which will be addressed are: (i) the life and self-understanding of Paul; (ii) his theological understandings; and (iii) the purpose of his writings and the issues they raise. Volume Four is not an assembly of disparate voices, but actually reflects one of the most important developments in the study of the New Testament and Early Christianity. Namely, it allows for the appreciation of the diverse expressions of faith that represented the Jesus movement in the first two centuries.

  Westerlund, David/ 9780415481243/ Price:GBP 1050.00

In recent decades, the number of Muslims in the West has increased rapidly, and interesting transformations of Islam have taken place-to some extent with repercussions in Islamic or predominantly Muslim countries in Asia and Africa. Volume I ('Regions and History') includes studies on the historical development of Islam, as well as key work on the current situation in various regions and countries.   Ghanea, Nazila/ 9780415477871/ Price:GBP 300.00

Hardly a week goes by without some world event relating to the burgeoning field of religion and human rights. Whether attacks carried out in the name of religion by individuals or states, violations of the rights of individuals or communities due to their religious or other beliefs, or clashes between religious and other competing rights (most notably, freedom of speech), matters relating to religion and human rights are not only an area of expert and academic interest, but also of increasing interest to policy-makers, governments, international organizations, and NGOs. This new four-volume Major Work collection from Routledge examines the background, history, and nature of human rights—both individual and collective—as well as economic, social, and cultural rights; and also civil and political rights. Standards, mechanisms, and jurisprudence at international and national levels are included, and form part of the discussion of the conflict of rights and freedom of religion or belief. Religions featured include Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and African religions, and the persecution or discrimination of religious or belief communities are discussed. Relevant human rights documents are also included. The range of subject areas that contribute to discussions on religion and human rights are many, and include: political science; law; international relations; anthropology; philosophy; religious studies; sociology of religion; and theology. this book provides an alternative (better) way to understand the future of religion, especially in the dialectic context of sacredness and secularness-while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favoring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible with each other). Thus, this book offers a new theory to go beyond the existing approaches in the literature on religion in a new way not thought of before.

VA17-80 Moot Papers, The.: Faith, Freedom and Society 1938-1944.
  Clements, Keith/ 9780567032577/ Price:GBP 250.00

The Moot was the study and discussion group set up by J.H. Oldham (1874-1969) following the 1937 Oxford Conference on “Church, Community and State.” Its purpose was to continue, in an informal, confidential but serious way, exploration of the relation between church and society and the realisation of Christian ethics in the public sphere. The Moot met twice or three times a year from 1938 to 1947 (21 times in all) and was convened by Oldham with the conscious intention of responding to the grave crisis that was felt to be facing western society in Britain no less than on the continent of Europe. Overall some 35 people attended the Moot at one time or another, but its core comprised a small number of regular members who were representative of the highest levels in theology, social science and public affairs. In addition to Oldham himself they included John Baillie, T.S. Eliot, H.A. Hodges, Eleonora Iredale, Adolf Lowe, Karl Mannheim, Walter Moberly, John Middleton Murry and Alec Vidler. Other participants included Kathleen Bliss, Fred Clarke, Christopher Dawson, H.H. Farmer, Hector Hetherington, Walter Oakshott and Gilbert Shaw, while notables such as Reinhold Niebuhr, Melville Chaning-Pearce, Donald Mackinnon, Philip Mairet, Lesslie Newbigin, William Paton, Frank Pakenham (later Lord Longford), Michael Polanyi and Oliver Tomkins made occasional “guest appearances.” Against the background of impending and then actual war, the discussions in the Moot repeatedly focused on the “planned” nature of modern society and therewith the roles (if any) within it of moral choice and the Christian community.

VA17-76 Religion and Politics, 4-Vols/Set.
  Haynes, Jeffrey/ 9780415490245/ Price:GBP 260.00

The early twenty-first century has witnessed a global resurgence of religious activity and identification. In particular, numerous examples of the growing political influence of religion can be cited, not least in Europe, once thought to be an inexorably secularizing continent. In India, meanwhile, officially a secular state, the Bharatiya Janata Party has served in several coalition governments and, until 2004, was the leading party in government. In the USA, religion continues to have a major impact on both domestic politics and the country’s international relations. More obviously perhaps, in the Middle East, religion plays an enormous part in political life, both domestically and internationally, while the Roman Catholic Church has played a leading role in the turn to democracy in Spain, Poland, and several Latin American countries. Volume I (‘The World Religions and Politics’) of this new four-volume collection from Routledge focuses on the major world religions and the roles they play in politics. Volume II (‘Religion and Governance’) brings together key work on: religion and secularization; religious fundamentalism; the relationship between church and state; religion and democracy; and religion and civil society. Volume III (‘Religion and International Relations’), meanwhile, assembles vital scholarship on religion and foreign policy, globalization, and terrorism. Finally, Volume IV collects work on ‘Religion, Development, and Security’ to examine religion and conflict; religion, gender, and politics; faith-based development aid; religion and science; and religion and human rights. With a full index and a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, that places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, Religion and Politics is an essential one-stop reference resource.

VA17-73 Philosophy of Religion, 4-Vols/Set.
  Wainwright, William J./ 9780415442107/ Price:GBP 925.00

The past forty years or so have witnessed a renaissance in the philosophy of religion. New tools (modal logic, probability theory, and so on) and new historical research have prompted many thinkers to take a fresh look at old topics (God’s existence, the problem of evil, faith and reason, and the like). Moreover, sophisticated examinations of contentious new issues, such as the problem of religious diversity or the role of emotions and other non-evidential factors in shaping rationally held religious beliefs, have also emerged. Addressing the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of this rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of scholarly literature, Philosophy of Religion is a new title in the Routledge Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Philosophy. Edited by a leading scholar, it is a four-volume collection which brings together key examples of the most important recent work, together with carefully selected historical pieces needed to understand them. Volume I focuses on concepts of the divine while Volume II explores arguments for and against the existence of a divine reality, with special attention to the problem of evil, the problem of divine hiddenness, and the case for naturalism. Volume III and the first part of Volume IV are devoted to broadly epistemic issues: the cognitive value of religious experience; the proper role of evidence in the formation of religious belief; the nature of justified religious belief; and pragmatic arguments for religious belief. The remainder of Volume IV introduces some of the best recent work on religious diversity, tolerance, and the public role of religion in a pluralistic society. The Philosophy of Religion is fully indexed and has a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the material in its historical and intellectual context. It is an essential work of reference and is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital one-stop research resource.

VA17-71 Church Dogmatics Study Edition, 31-Vols/Set.
  Barth, Karl/ 9780567022790/ Price:GBP 600.00

Karl Barth (1886-1968), the Swiss Reformed professor and pastor, was once described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas. His great contribution to theology, church, and culture will take generations to appropriate and assess. As the principal author of "The Barmen Declaration," he was the intellectual leader of the German Confessing Church, the Protestant group that resisted the Third Reich. Among Barth's many books, sermons and essays, the multivolume Church Dogmatics -- a closely reasoned, eloquently stated argument in nearly ten thousand pages -- stands out as the crown of his achievement.

VA17-70 Women and Religion, 4-Vols/Set.
  Klassen, Pamela/ 9780415438391/ Price:GBP 280.00

This collection is an essential research tool for all students specializing in religion and women’s studies, and is equally useful to those working in related fields such as anthropology, cultural studies, history, literary studies, philosophy, political science, psychology, and theology. By tracing the evolution of the topic, from the beginnings of feminist research on religion to more contemporary debates about categorizations of gender in the study of religion, this four-volume collection serves the needs of both specialist and generalist users. Women and Religion includes essays treating a broad range of religious traditions, while focusing on particular methodological and theoretical concerns common to the study of women and religion. Organized thematically, each volume includes the most formative theoretical contributions to the field, grouped together with articles that explore a particular set of issues from a range of traditions, with the use of methodologies drawn from anthropology, history, sociology, textual criticism, and religious studies. Each volume’s introductory essay explicitly problematizes the central categories of analysis operating in the study of women and religion—for example, women, gender, religion, body, science, and colonialism—while also setting the articles in historical context.

VA17-67 World Islam, 4-Vols/Set.
  Rippin, Andrew/ 9780415401036/ Price:GBP 950.00

Reflecting the diversity of Islam, this collection focuses on the presence of Muslims in countries outside the traditionally conceived heartlands of the Islamic world. The history of the arrival of Islam in such countries and the nature of the way in which Islam is practised in such places is the thematic focus of the materials selected for inclusion. Today, the community of Muslims around the globe looks to the Arab world (and Iran) as a source of identity and authority. While this is driven as much by finances as by religious ideology, it does create a sense of there being a central Islamic world and a ‘diaspora’ which can be separated and considered. This separation may also be considered a historical phenomenon: the core ‘Islamic world’ came into existence as a result of the early military expansion of the Arabs up to about 750CE; after that point, the spread of Islam occurred by different and more gradual means (often influenced by trade especially). Both of these ways of conceptualizing the region of interest results is a vast amount of territory in which to explore the special manifestations of Islam.

Contemporary Paganism emerged in Britain in the 1940s and 1950s as a new religious movement, although practitioners understood themselves to be participating in a witchcraft tradition extending back into medieval—if not prehistoric—times. In recent decades, Pagan Studies has emerged through a plethora of sophisticated anthropological, sociological, and historical studies, and this new three-volume collection from Routledge’s Critical Concepts in Religious Studies series brings together the best foundational and cutting-edge scholarship in one ‘mini library’. Volume I addresses the emergence of Paganism as a religion. It collects scholarly analyses of the historical evolution of Paganism, and is organized under topics including debates of historical accuracy, influences on the development of Paganism, and the process of routinization in the religion. The second volume addresses the importance of environmentalism in contemporary Paganism, including work on how Pagans think about the natural world, environmental ethics, and related political activism. The final volume addresses the importance of gender issues and feminism in contemporary Paganism, and collects the best research on topics including immanence, embodiment, self-image, and sexuality. Paganism is fully indexed and has a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is an essential work of reference and is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital one-stop research and pedagogic resource.

SA17-474 Dictionary of Buddhism.
  Gakkai, Soka/ 9788120833340/ Price:US$ 16.50

Anyone reading English translations of Buddhist texts will encounter a host of names, terms, and phrases whose meanings are not clear even though they appear in English. Buddhism is famous for its specialized terminology and translation alone may not communicate its full meaning. East Asian Buddhist diction is layered with several languages -Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Japanese -and the only way to make one's way through this linguistic maze without getting lost is with the aid of a good dictionary. The Soka Gakkai Dictionary of Buddhism, a revised and expanded version of A Dictionary of Buddhist Terms and Concepts (1983), is a welcome addition that serves this purpose. Written clearly for the general reader, the Dictionary contains over 2,700 entries. While it is designed primarily for use with the Soka Gakkai's translations of Nichiren's works, the Dictionary contains a wealth of terms found in all other traditions of Buddhism. Definitions are given for technical terms, historical figures, doctrinal texts, institutions, and place names. The entries provide complete cross-references so that readers may know and further pursue meanings of term equivalents as rendered in other ways or languages. Ten appendixes provide maps and world lists that enable the reader to find terms in English, Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, or Japanese. Like all buddhist masters, Nichiren presented his particular message in the wider context of other Buddhist teachings and practices. To know the particular, one must also understand the general context, and the Dictionary, in addressing both levels, provides essential knowledge not only for students of Nichiren Buddhism, but for anyone reading Buddhist texts.

VA17-64 Church-State Issues in America Today, 3-Vols/Set.
  Duncan, Ann W./ 9780275993672/ Price:GBP 206.95

Church and state issues are in the news now more than ever before. Political and religious leaders alike are negotiating on shaky ground as they balance their religious/moral and political perspectives with their roles as leaders. New technologies push the boundaries of moral consensus by creating new controversies such as those involving stem-cell research and medical measures to sustain or end the lives of the terminally ill. The Supreme Court continues to work to clarify the fuzzy line between religion and politics as it addresses cases regarding abortion, school prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance, among other issues. Further controversies only lead to further divisions among Americans. At the beginning of the 21st century, there are as many interpretations of this separation as there are interpretations of particular issues such as abortion or school vouchers. This three-volume collection summarizes the history and current status of issues involving the separation of church and state through chapters examining the backgrounds, relevant constitutional concerns, and variety of perspectives on specific controversies. Framed by a general discussion of the history of the separation between church and state and through careful attention to subjects such as capital punishment, gay marriage, and clergy support of political leaders, there emerges an incredibly complex, enlightening, and provocative picture for anyone with an interest in the unique nature of religion in the United States of America.

VA17-60 Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States, 2-Vols/Set.
  Cesari, Jocelyne/ 9780313336256/ Price:GBP 137.95

Some scholars believe that the influence of Islam in the United States can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson. Today, Islam and American Muslim populations are growing in importance in this country, and demand for information about them is high, especially in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. This A-to-Z encyclopedia will help students and other readers get a fast grip on pertinent holidays, terms, beliefs, practices, notables, and sects of the Islamic faith and Muslim practitioners in the United States. The accompanying primary documents volume provides 93 crucial articles, speeches, essays, poems, songs, and more to flesh out the encyclopedia entries. This encyclopedia and primary documents set, the first on the topic and for the general reader, is a must-have for every library. The primary focus is contemporary but the entries are historically contextualized, so the fuller picture of origins outside the country and practice now in the United States is clear. Further reading suggestions accompany each entry. The primary documents volume enhances the encyclopedic entries with annotated selections such as an article from an entry on a leading Muslim American magazine or an essay by a Muslim American scholar to illuminate an entry on her. This will be a boon for students doing reports on Islam and for non-Muslims looking to learn about Muslims in an objective, broad way. It is clearly and authoritatively written and compiled by a host of scholars, primarily from Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies. An introduction, chronology, selected bibliography, set index, and photos round out the set.

VA17-59 SAGE Handbook of the Sociology of Religion, The.
  Beckford, James A./ 9781412911955/ Price:GBP 125.00

At a time when religions are increasingly affecting, and affected by, life beyond the narrowly sacred sphere, religion everywhere seems to be caught up in change and conflict. In the midst of this contention and confusion, the sociology of religion provides a rich source of understanding and explanation. This Handbook presents an unprecedentedly comprehensive assessment of the field, both where it has been and where it is headed. Like its many distinguished contributors, its topics and their coverage are truly global in their reach. The Handbook's 35 chapters are organized into eight sections: basic theories and debates; methods of studying religion; social forms and experiences of religion; issues of power and control in religious organizations; religion and politics; individual religious behaviour in social context; religion, self-identity and the life-course; and case studies of China, Eastern Europe, Israel, Japan, and Mexico. Each chapter establishes benchmarks for the state of sociological thinking about religion in the 21st century and provides a rich bibliography for pursuing its subject further. Overall, the Handbook stretches the field conceptually, methodologically, comparatively, and historically. It promises to be an indispensable source of guidance and insight for both students and scholars for years to come.

  Ridgeon, Lloyd/ 9780415419437/ Price:GBP 850.00

In this new Routledge Major Work, the editor, a leading scholar in the field, has gathered in four volumes the canonical and the very best cutting-edge literature on Sufism to create an indispensable reference resource. The collection focuses on: origins and development; hermeneutics and doctrines; ritual, authority, and word; and modern Sufism.

VA17-42 Shi'ism, 4-Vols/Set.
  Turner, Colin/ 9780415391870/ Price:GBP 1000.00

The four volumes of this set bring together key contributions to the study of Shi’ism, giving access to material that has hitherto been scattered and difficult to locate. While the majority of the material stems from the past fifty years, earlier studies are included, providing insight into the field’s development. This collection reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of today’s Shi’ite studies. Volume One covers the birth of Shi’ism and traces its development. The emphasis is on the socio-political history of communities self-identifying as Shi’ite, focusing largely on the majority ‘Twelvers’, but also covering ‘offshoot’ sects. Volume Two consists of articles which explore the theologies and philosophical ideals of Shi’ism. Particular emphasis is given to those aspects of Shi’ite orthodoxy and orthopraxy which distinguish them from the Sunni majority. Volume Three is devoted to Shi’ite law, with special reference to the evolution of ‘independent reasoning’ – the principle which underpins the inherent dynamism of Shi’ite jurisprudence and which has ensured continuation of development down to the present day. Volume Four concentrates on the development of theories of government among the Shi’ite scholarly milieu, tracing political Shi’ism from its turbulent beginnings to its pre-modern and contemporary manifestation.

  Cornell, Vincent J./ 9780275987329/ Price:GBP 310.95

Despite frequent and extensive publications on Islam, very few Americans, indeed very few non-Muslims, truly understand the faith or the more than one billion adherents who live it. This set presents the diversity and richness of Islam, filling in the blanks and expanding our knowledge and understanding. Portraying Muslims in all their humanity and diversity balances the images that have bombarded society and presents the reader with a fuller and more accurate picture of the Islamic faith and what it means to live as a Muslim--in Muslim communities, and as part of a broader tapestry of pluralism in the nations of the world. What does it mean to share Muslim concerns? To experience Muslim spirituality? What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite sects? Why do Muslims pray so frequently? What is the reality of Muslim marriage and gender relations? What is the meaning of jihad and martyrdom to a practicing Muslim? What role do the arts and humanities play in modern Muslim life? How are Islamic children raised? These questions and others are answered in these volumes, which bring together Muslim voices from around the world, including men and women, scholars and laypersons, fundamentalists and progressives, and others from various cultural, political, and Islamic backgrounds. Personal experiences and poetry are included to illustrate the many different expressions of Islam.

VA17-44 Encyclopedia of Religious Revivals in America, 2-Vols/Set.
  McClymond, Michael/ 9780313328282/ Price:GBP 155.95

This definitive, two-volume encyclopedia is the first academic reference work devoted specifically to religious revivals in North America. Incorporating the work of 120 scholars, the first volume contains an A-Z set of 228 articles touching on people (e.g., Billy Graham, Aimee Semple McPherson, Francisco Olazabal, etc.), revival events (the Great Awakening, Cane Ridge, the Azusa Street Revival), religious denominations or groups associated with revivals (Methodists, Pentecostals, Primitive Baptists), revival practices (the altar call, bodily manifestations, preaching, praying, speaking in tongues), and themes in revivals (confession of sins, ecstasy, eschatology, foreign missions, material culture, money and revivals). The second volume includes a documentary history of religious revivals from 1527 to 2005, with editorial introductions and selected passages from 121 primary texts--some published here for the first time--and a general bibliography of about 5000 books, articles, and dissertations. Religious revivals have had a tremendous impact on American society throughout its history. During the First Great Awakening (1739-45), waves of religious fervor spread throughout the American colonies. The Second Great Awakening (1795-1835) witnessed the expansion of existing denominations (e.g., Baptist and Methodist) and the foundation of new denominations such as the Disciples of Christ, the Shakers, the Oneida Community, and the Seventh-day Adventists. These revivalist groups flowered and played a critical role in such cultural and historical movements as abolitionism, temperance, and the struggle for women's rights. More recently, the growing strength of Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism during the late 20th Century may be yet another "great awakening" that has had--and will have--a profound impact on political, social, and cultural developments.

VA17-35 Islamic Philosophy and Theology, 4-Vols/Set.
  Netton, Ian Richard/ 9780415343930/ Price:GBP 1050.00

Islam, one of the world’s great faiths, was born as a result of the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (c. 570-632) in Arabia. A proper understanding of the Islamic present depends on an accurate knowledge of the way in which Islamic thought developed from medieval times onwards. For instance, Islam evolved a sophisticated theology and set of philosophical systems of its own, which owed something to the impact of Greek thought, but became uniquely Islamic because of the vital presence within that faith of the Qur’an. Furthermore, Islam soon came into contact with Greek philosophy and science, and a translation movement into Arabic began. The roles of Kason and Revelation, and the primacy that was to be given to one or the other, came to the fore. Problems which had also vexed Christianity such as anthropomorphism, free will and predestination provided intellectual stimulation for Islamic thinkers, while the mystical impulse, articulated in Islamic Sufism, imbued the writings of several of the theologians and philosophers considered in these volumes. Taken together, all of these issues constitute a golden period of Islamic debate and intellectual inquiry, and the articles collected in this fascinating set reflect that Islamic dynamic.

VA05-169 Jean-Francois Lyotard, 3-Vols/Set.
  Taylor, Victor E./ 9780415338196/ Price:GBP 220.00

Jean-Francois Lyotard's importance to contemporary philosophy cannot be overstated. Often associated with the concept of 'postmodernism,' Lyotard, along with Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Gilles Deleuze, was a central figure in the 'theory debates' during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. His writings across the disciplines strongly influenced the current shape of contemporary continental philosophy and critical theory, with his posthumously published books and essays having a significant influence on current scholarly debates. Lyotard's contributions to contemporary continental philosophy are many, with critical concepts such as differend, meta-narratives, little-narratives, pagan aesthetics, and parology becoming permanent entries in the postmodern lexicon. While much remains to be explored in his arguments and theoretical propositions, it is his later philosophico-poetics that may be his enduring legacy.

VA17-43 Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature, 2-Vols/Set.
  Taylor, Bron/ 9781843711384/ Price:GBP 375.00

In the new millennium, as environmental alarm has escalated, so has interest and concern about the role of religion in nature. Much of the thinking has involved a hope for a 'greening' of religion – i.e. that religion might promote environmentally-protective action. Many believe that this 'greening' of religion is a prerequisite for solving the world's social and environmental problems. Curiosity regarding the relationships between human culture, religion and the wider natural world, however, goes beyond such curiosity. The ERN represents an intensive effort to broaden the inquiry and asks the fundamental question: What are the relationships between Homo sapiens, their diverse religions, and the earth's living systems? The answers are difficult and complex, intertwined with and complicated by a host of social, environmental, and religious variables. The goal of the ERN is to explore this question in a way that illuminates these relationships without engaging in wishful thinking, irrational pessimism, or the tendency to oversimplify the dynamic, sometimes rapidly evolving relations between humans, their religions, and the natural world. Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature shows convincingly that religion has a great deal to do with nature, nature a great deal to do with religion, and both have everything to do with the planetary future.

VA17-40 Introduction to the World's Major Religions, 6-Vols/Set.
  Taitz, Emily/ 9780313336348/ Price:GBP 235.95

World religions and religious diversity are increasingly being taught in schools. This trend reflects the changing religious landscape of the United States with significant new immigrant groups who worship outside the dominant Judeo-Christian traditions. The purpose of these 6 narrative volumes, each covering a major world religion, is to provide high school students on up and general readers witha clear, objective, detailed overview on the religion's history of foundation, text and major tenets, branches, practice worldwide, rituals and holidays, and major figures. The set fills a niche between the available sophisticated adult offerings and those for a middle school audience and offers up-to-date information and perspectives. Little knowledge of the religion and only an intellectual interest in the subject are assumed. The six titles in the set are: * Judaism * Confucianism and Taoism * Buddhism * Christianity * Islam * Hinduism Each volume contains the following elements: * Introduction * Chronology * Timeline * Narrative chapters on history of foundation, texts and major tenets, branches, practice worldwide (including demographics), rituals and holidays, and major figures * Glossary * Bibliography * Index * Illustrations There is also a set index.

Increasing global travel, Westerners who have taken up the practice of Buddhism, and Buddhist teachers and academics who now live in the West mean that there is now greater access to Buddhism than ever before. VA17-31 Encyclopedia of New Religious Movements.
  Clarke, Peter/ 9780415267076/ Price:GBP 240.00

The study of new religious movements has until recently been focused within sociology; it is now becoming a major area of study within religious studies. As student and scholar numbers rise the need for a one stop reference work of global coverage has become ever important, and the Encyclopedia of New Religious Movements fills this gap. An essential companion to both research and scholarship upon which undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and researchers can all be expected to draw. From Waco to Hollywood and the Church of Scientology, to the political and human rights issues surrounding the practice of Falun Gong in China, new religious movements have become more prominent in today's society. No longer only an area of study in sociology, new religious movements have grown as a distinct and important aspect of religious studies. The Encyclopedia of New Religious Movements brings together in one resource coverage of new religious movements all over the world. This comprehensive A-Z reference examines the people, movements, concepts, and ideologies of new religious movements including entries on Neo-Paganism, the Unification Church, exit counselling, Hamas, Santeria, Reformed Church in Japan, Theosophical Society, yoga, and many more.

These included many specimens of popular literature of a kind that was not previously known to exist. Although the find was made long ago, only two or three of these pieces had been translated before. Arthur Waley here translates, whole or as extracts, twenty-six pieces, making an invaluable addition to world literature.

VA03-103-11 Religion in China.
  Hughes, E. R./ 9780415361552/ Price:GBP 230.00

Beginning with ancient times, this volume shows how some of the early superstitions became purified through the influence of the Confucianist philosophy, how a deep strain of mysticism came from the Taoists and how thereby a worship of 'Heaven' and 'Earth' was evolved. Besides the main streams of Confucianism and Buddhism, the introduction and development of Christianity into China is also analyzed.

On the basis of all this information, the Greek text of the Life of Adam and Eve in its earliest attainable stage, is established. The text edition is accompanied by a full critical apparatus, in which all relevant evidence from the manuscripts is recorded. Several indices complete this volume.

SA17-323 The Social Roots of Biblical Yahwism.
  Cook, S. L./ 9789004130555/ Price:EUR 105.00

Sure to provoke discussion and debate as it offers a unique approach to some old and perplexing issues in the history of ancient Israel and its religion, Cook's study is a bold new proposal for synthesizing the social history of Israel's religious traditions. Among the many "Yahwisms" coexisting in ancient Israel was an initially small minority stream of theological tradition composed of geographically and socially diverse groups in northern and southern Israel. These groups shared a religious commitment to a covenantal, village-based, land-oriented Yahwism that arose before the emergence of Israelite kingship. It eventually rose to dominance, and its theology provided robust resources for dealing with the Babylonian exile. It thus came to occupy a prominent place in the present canon of the Hebrew Bible. Cook combines detailed study of biblical texts with a carefully constructed social-scientific method and body of data to argue for the early origins of biblical Yahwism. This book is written to be accessible to lay readers and also of significant interest to Hebrew Bible students and specialists.

SA17-323 Hidden Wisdom: Esoteric Traditions and the Roots of Christian Mysticism.
  Stroumsa, G. G./ 9789004136359/ Price:EUR 64.00

This book investigates the problem of esoteric traditions in early Christianity, their origin and their transformation in Patristic hermeneutics, in the West as well as in the East. It argues that these traditions eventually formed the basis of nascent Christian mysticism in Late Antiquity. These esoteric traditions do not reflect the influence of Greek Mystery religions, as has often been claimed, but rather seem to stem from the Jewish background of Christianity. They were adopted by various Gnostic teachings, a fact which helps explaining their eventual disappearance from Patristic literature. The eleven chapters study each a different aspect of the problem, including the questions of Gnostic and Manichaean esotericism. This book will be of interest to all students of religious history in Late Antiquity.

SA17-323 Competing for Honor: A Social-Scientific Reading of Daniel 1-6.
  Kirkpatrick, Shane/ 9789004144873/ Price:EUR 133.00

Using social-scientific criticism, this work presents a reading of Daniel 1-6 as literature of resistance. The characters and episodes of these tales are read against a backdrop of social competition for the cultural value of honor. Each of the tales of Daniel 1-6 is analyzed, revealing a comparison that is sustained throughout the compilation and that pits the Judean tradition in competition with a dominant foreign tradition. The dynamics of comparison and competition are explored in each tale with the help of social-scientific models depicting honor and exploring the related dynamics of purity, patronage, virtue, limited good, and envy. This work is particularly useful for scholars and students interested in social-scientific criticism and the value of that methodology for Hebrew Bible study, as well as for those interested in Daniel, honor and shame, ancient rhetoric, and cultural resistance in the postexilic period.

SA17-323 Hebrews: Contemporary Methods, New Insights.
  Gelardini, Gabriella/ 9789004144903/ Price:EUR 145.00

The present volume contains a collection of fourteen essays applying the latest and neglected methods and offering new and innovative insights into the interpretation of the New Testament book To the Hebrews. The excitingly diverse contributions, which stem from an intriguing international group of senior and younger Hebrews, New Testament, and Old Testament scholars, are presented in three parts: Part One focuses on cultic language, concepts, and practice in Hebrews; Part Two on sociology, ethics, and rhetoric in Hebrews; and Part Three on textual-historical, comparative, and intertextual approaches to Hebrews. As the first ever compilation of essays on Hebrews by a range of authors, this volume presents an important contribution to the field of New Testament studies. It will particularly appeal to students, teachers, and scholars interested in a variety of critical perspectives on Hebrews and on the New Testament's third great theologian next to Paul and John. Moreover, the treatment of hermeneutical, cultic, sociological, and comparative matters in the context of biblical, Greco-Roman, and rabbinic literature will make this collection valuable to an even broader readership.

SA17-323 Daily Life in Biblical Times.
  Borowski, O./ 9789004127074/ Price:EUR 67.00

While the history of Israel during the period from ca. 1200 to 586 BCE has been in the forefront of biblical research, little attention has been given to questions of daily life. Where did the Israelites live? What did people do for a living? What did they eat and what affected their health? How did the family function? These and similar questions form the basis for this book. The book introduces different aspects of daily life. It describes the natural setting and the people who occupied the land. It deals with the economy, both rural and urban, emphasizing the main sources of livelihood such as agriculture, herding, and trade. These topics are discussed in relation to the family in particular and the social structure in general. Other topics include urban society, the bureaucracy and the military. Beyond material culture, the book delves into daily and seasonal cultural, social and religious activities, art, music, and the place of writing in Israelite society. Drawing on textual and archaeological evidence, and written with nontechnical language, the book will be especially helpful for undergraduates, seminarians, pastors, rabbis, and other interested nonspecialist readers as well as graduate students and faculty in Hebrew Bible.

SA17-323 Religion as a Profession.
  Schilderman, Hans/ 9789004144521/ Price:EUR 145.00

This volume offers a conceptual and empirical study of the religious profession. It takes as its point of departure professionalisation theory that is discussed and applied to a profession in mainstream religion, in this case Dutch Catholic ministry. The book entails a well-documented empirical study of attitudes of clergy and lay personnel in the Dutch Roman-Catholic Church regarding the pastoral profession. Their attitudes towards church authority, apostolicity, sacramental efficacy, accession to the office, and spiritual role are described extensively. The research clarifies the extent to which these religious attitudes act as a positive or negative motif to engage in policies that are aimed at a professional development of the occupation. The book offers an excellent insight into basic characteristics of a religious profession.

SA17-323 Asking for Rhetoric: The Hebrew Bible's Protean Interrogative.
  Craig, M./ 9780391042315/ Price:EUR 145.00

What is a question? Kenneth Craig poses this query in the introductory chapter of his innovative study on the function of interrogatives in the Hebrew Bible. He describes a question as "a special literary phenomenon. A question is an opening that seeks to be closed, and its rhetorical play derives from how it disposes its energies: how it invites opening, how it imposes closure" (p. 2). Carefully analyzing texts from Genesis, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, Haggai and Zechariah, Craig demonstrates the nuanced and multifaceted ways in which the Hebrew Bible's interrogatives function to advance the Bible's literary and ideological goals.

SA17-323 A Companion to Second-Century Christian 'Heretics'.
  Marjane, Antti/ 9789004144644/ Price:EUR 174.00

The book illuminates "the other side" of early Christianity by examining thinkers and movements that were embraced by many second-century religious seekers as legitimate forms of Christianity, but which are now largely forgotten, or are known only from the characteristics attributed to them in the writings of their main adversaries. The collection deals with the following teachers and movements: Basilides, Sethianism, Valentinus' school, Marcion, Tatian, Bardaisan, Montanists, Cerinthus, Ebionites, Nazarenes, Jewish-Christianity of the Pseudo-Clementines, and Elchasites. Where appropriate, the authors have included an overview of the life and significant publications of the "heretics," along with a description of their theologies and movements. Therefore, this volume can serve as a handbook of the second-century "heretics" and their "heresies." Since all the chapters have been written by specialists who wrestle daily with their research themes, the contributions also offer new perspectives and insights stimulating further discussion on this fascinating - but often neglected - side of early Christianity.

  Stuckrad, Kocku Von/ 9789004124332/ Price:EUR 499.00

The new and impressively comprehensive Brill Dictionary of Religion addresses religion as an element of daily life and public discourse. Richly illustrated and with more than 500 entries, the dictionary is a multi-media reference source on the many and various forms of religious commitment. It is unusual in that it not only addresses the different theologies and doctrinal declarations of the official institutionalized religions but it also gives equal weight and consideration to a multiplicity of other religious phenomena. People perceive and express religious experiences in many different ways: through dance, sensuality, in relations between sexes and in compassion at death. Religions help determine how people form and perceive their identity as part of a social group. The diverse effects of religions can also be perceived in the environment, society and the public sphere. The Brill Dictionary of Religion helps map out and define the networks and connections created by various religions in contemporary societies, and provides models for understanding these complex phenomena.

VA17-34 Folklore, 4-Vols/Set.
  Dundes, Alan/ 9780415316620/ Price:GBP 1050.00

The academic study of folklore is a worldwide, interdisciplinary field spanning the humanities and the social sciences. It is very much tied to nationalism and national identity and for this reason it has often been the smaller countries that have led the way in terms of providing theory and method. There are many significant articles, mostly written by European folklorists, which remain essentially unavailable to most folklore students. Many appear in periodicals, which are not readily available, such as fabula (folktale studies) and proverbium (proverb studies). This set of volumes provides students and researchers with a comprehensive collection of articles covering the principal theoretical and methodological concepts.

VA17-29 Koran, The: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies, 4-Vols/Set.
  Turner, Colin/ 9780415311915/ Price:GBP 820.00

The four volumes of this set bring together some of the most significant modern and pre-modern contributions to the study of the Islamic revelation, giving readers access to material that has hitherto been scattered and often difficult to locate. While the bulk of the material stems from the past fifty years, classic studies from earlier periods have been included, thus providing insight into the developmental dynamics of the field. Drawn from a wide range of journals, research monographs, occasional papers and edited volumes, the articles that make up this collection reflect the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of Koranic studies as it stands today. An extensive introduction at the beginning of the first volume draws together the four volumes and places each article in its broader context.

VA17-28 Shamanism: Critical Concepts in Sociology, 3-Vols/Set.
  Znamenski, Andrei A./ 9780415311922/ Price:GBP 230.00

Mircea Eliade descibed shamanism as the primal religion of humanity, the 'archaic technique of ecstasy'. The books of best-selling author Carlos Castaneda made it part of popular culture. Since the 1960s shamanism has continued to attract the attention of scholars, artists, writers and the general public. The most intriguing aspect of this religion is the ability of shamans to enter into contact with spirits on behalf of their communities. The first eighteenth-century explorers of Siberia dubbed shamanism a blatant fraud. Later, academic observers stamped it as 'neurotic delusion'. In the 1960s shamans were recast as 'wounded healers', who sacrifice their lives for the spiritual well being of their communities. Many current writers and scholars treat shamanism as ancient wisdom that has much to teach us about true spirituality. This anthology tells the story of shamanism in Eurasia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. It brings together for the first time fifty-six articles and book excerpts by anthropologists, psychologists, religious scholars and historians, illustrating the variety of views on this subject.

VA17-21 Historical Jesus, The: Critical Concepts in Religious Studies, 4-Vols/Set.
  Evans, Craig/ 9780415327503/ Price:GBP 350.00

The historical study of the Jesus stories and the transmission of these stories through time has been of seminal importance to historians of religion. Critical historical examination allows scholars an escape from the confines of dogma, belief, and the theological interpretation. In recent years, historical Jesus studies have also opened up an important discussion concerning anti-Semitism and early Christianity and the political and ideological filtering of the Jesus story of early Christianity through the Roman Empire and beyond. This comprehensive collection brings together the vast array of historical research into the reality of the man, the teachings, and the acts and events ascribed to him that have served as the foundational story of one of the world's central religions.

SA17-323 The Challenge of Religious Discrimination at the Dawn of the New Millennium.
  Ghanea, N./ 9789004136410/ Price:EUR 119.00

The themes and issues explored in this book - religion, human rights, politics and society could not be more relevant to the post 11 September 2001 world. They lie at the heart of global political debate today. The collection explores these issues after the passing of just over two decades from the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of all Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination based on Religion or Belief. That declaration set out minimum international standards for the elimination of such discrimination. Sadly the challenge of intolerance on the basis of religion or belief continues to plague us, and tackling it seems to have become increasingly entrenched. The complexity of this phenomenon requires expertise from different quarters. This collection draws from diplomatic, activist and theological quarters and benefits from the analysis of scholars of law, history, religious studies and sociology. The ten chapters of this collection examine the relationship between human rights, law and religion; offer a typology for the study of religious persecution; problematise the consequences flowing from religious establishment in religiously plural society; analyse the implications of the directions being taken by the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and the protections offered by the European Commission council Directive 2000/43/EC outlawing workplace discrimination; study the 1981 Declaration and its promotion through the work of the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief; and explore the intricacies of this freedom in detail from within the context of the United Kingdom and The Netherlands.

SA17-323 History of Biblical Israel.
  Malamat, A./ 9780391042209/ Price:EUR 59.00

The history of Israel of the Bible remains one of the most hotly contested issues in scholarship of the Hebrew Bible today. One of the clearest voices in the debate is that of Abraham Malamat. In the pages Malamat distills years of writing on the history of Israel from its beginnings up to the destruction of the First Temple of Jerusalem (586 B.C.E.). Malamat divides his study into the following sections: (1) The Dawn of Israel; (2) Forming a Nation; (3) The Rise of the Davidic Dynasty; (4) Twilight of Judah and the Destruction of the First Temple; and (5) Historical Episodes in the Former Prophets and the Prophetical Books. All those interested in the emergence of Israel as a people and the rise of the story of Israel will find this an essential volume.

SA17-323 Normativity and Empirical Research in Theology.
  Van der Ven, Johannes A./ 9789004126633/ Price:EUR 127.00

The idea for this volume originates from the first meeting of the International Society of Empirical Research in Theology (ISERT) in 2002 at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In this volume, researchers and academics from South Africa, Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands debate about the fundamental question of the role of theological normativity in empirical research in theological fields. In fourteen contributions this book would like to illuminate the significance of this central topic for the discipline of practical theology. The first part of the book provides a discussion about the empirical character of practical theology and the consequences for scientific research in theological fields. The second part deals with the normative implications of empirical research. It is shown with the help of concrete research projects that empirical research is possible in practical theology and that theology works normatively in empirical research.

SA17-323 Redescribing Christian Origins.
  Cameron, R. A./ 9789004130647/ Price:EUR 186.00

In this collection of provocative and ambitious essays, participants in the SBL's Seminar on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins challenge traditional paradigms and reimagine the beginnings of Christian religion. Rather than assume that the gospel story has its foundation in the historical Jesus, a human encounter with transcendence, or the dramatic religious experience of individuals, contributors make use of social anthropology and propose that the beginnings of Christianity can be understood as reflexive social experiments. The first of three proposed volumes that launch a new and genuinely critical discourse about the history of early Christianities. Contributors include William E. Arnal, Willi Braun, Ron Cameron, Barry S. Crawford, Arthur J. Dewey, Burton L. Mack, Luther H. Martin, Christopher R. Matthews, Merrill P. Miller, Dennis E. Smith, Jonathan Z. Smith, and Stanley K. Stowers.

Among Library Journal's picks of the most important reference works of the millennium -- with the Encyclopedia Judaica and the New Catholic Encyclopedia -- Mircea Eliade's Encyclopedia of Religion won the American Library Associations' Dartmouth Medal in 1988 and is widely regarded as the standard reference work in the field. This second edition, which is intended to reflect both changes in academia and in the world since 1987, includes almost all of the 2,750 original entries -- many heavily updated -- as well as approximately 600 entirely new articles. Preserving the best of Eliade's cross-cultural approach, while emphasizing religion's role within everyday life and as a unique experience from culture to culture, this new edition is the definitive work in the field for the 21st century. An international team of scholars and contributors have reviewed, revised and added to every word of the classic work, making it relevant to the questions and interests of all researchers. The result is an essential purchase for libraries of all kinds.

VE01-14 Evolution Debate, 1813-1870, The. 9-Vols/Set.
  Knight, David/ 9780415289221/ Price:GBP 525.00

The history of evolutionary thought is often seen as a triumph of secularism in the form of 'scientific naturalism', over religious bigotry. But for those involved in the debate during the nineteenth century, these divisions were not so clearly marked. This collection of nine volumes will bring together key works in the development of evolutionary theory from fundamentalists, such as Philip Gosse who insisted on a literal reading of Genesis, to T.H. Huxley, whose passionate defence of evolution theory earned him the title of 'Darwin's Bulldog'. Between these two extreme positions are situated the works of Cuvier, Wallace, Buckland, Lyell and Owen, all of whom rejected Darwin's version of evolution to varying degrees. Each volume includes a new introduction by the editor, which provides an historical and intellectual context for each of the works, while a general introduction in the first volume provides an overview of the collection as a whole.

VA17-20-2 Writings of Robert Harrison and Robert Browne, The.
  / 9780415319904/ Price:GBP 240.00

Robert Harrison and Robert Browne were the initiators of the principles of English Separatism and Congregationalism. Unlike the Presbytero-Puritans, these nonconformists sought to establish local churches that were independent of the state. Although they encountered fierce opposition from the clergy, state officials and Anglican bishops, they persisted in their practices. As a result, the ideas of these two men profoundly influenced the Puritan movement both of England and America.

It contains among others: accounts of Cartwright's examination before the Commissioners in 1590, Resolution of Doubts about entering the Ministry, several of his letters, A Short Catechism (1579), The Holy Exercise of a True Fast (1580) and a Preface to an Hospital for the Diseased 1959

VA17-20 Elizabethan Non-conformist Texts, 6-Vols/Set.
  Carlson, Leland H./ 9780415319881/ Price:GBP 800.00

Originally published in the 1950s by George Allen & Unwin. When originally published, these volumes were making available very rare material (tracts and manuscripts etc.) for the very first time. Most of the documents exist in their original state as difficult to locate, read and understand - for example: there are only two copies of A Plaine Refutation (1591) and two copies of A Brief Discoverie of the False Church. It is impossible to understand the rise and development of Independency and of the democratic idea in religion and in politics without reflection upon some of this rare material.

SA03-301 Islam, Sectarianism and Politics in the Sudan Since the Mahdiyya.
  Warburg, Gabriel R./ 9781850655886/ Price:GBP 45.00

Why another book on Islam and politics in Sudan? The unique history of Sudan's Islamic politics suggests the answer. The revolt in 1881 was led by a Mahdi who came to renew and purify Islam. It was in effect an uprising against a corrupt Islamic regime, the largely alien Turco-Egyptian ruling Elite. The Mahdiyya was therefore an anti-colonial movement, seeking to liberate Sudan from alien rule and to unify the Muslim Umma, and it later evolved into the first expression of Sudanese nationalism and statehood. Post-Independence Islamic radicalism, in turn, can be viewed against the background of the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium, (1899-1956). It also thrived as a result of the resurgence of Islam since the mid-1960s, when Nasserism and other popular ideologies were swept aside. Finally, Sudan has emerged as the centre of militancy in Sunni Islam since June 1989, when a group of radical Islamic officers, under the guidance of Dr Hassan al-Turabi and the NIF, assumed power. In Warburg's view, the determination to enforce an Islamic state and an Islamic constitution on a multi-religious and multi-ethnic society has led to prolonged civil war, endless military coups and political, social and economic bankruptcy.

"The Encyclopedia of Buddhism is a welcome addition to the reference literature for the tradition itself and, more broadly, Buddhist and Asian studies. Public and academic libraries serving readers with interest in these areas would do well to acquire it." --Booklist (March 2004) Providing a comprehensive overview of one of Asia's most important religious and social forces, the Encyclopedia of Buddhism describes the Buddhist world view, basic teachings and practices of Buddhism, as well as its different schools and sects. In addition to containing entries on Buddhist scriptures, art, architecture, saints, demons, monastic orders, festivals, rites and ceremonies, this 2-vol. set explores the history of Buddhism, the different forms it has taken in different parts of the world, and how Buddhism has blended with other religions like Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism and Christianity.

Information on these groups is presented in two distinct sections. These sections contain essays and directory listings that describe the historical development of religious families and give factual information about each group within those families, including, when available, rubrics for membership figures, educational facilities and periodicals.

`It's so good ... Non-western philosophies are given a lot of room, and this is one of the best things about the REP not only because comprehensiveness is good in itself, but also because philosophers badly need to know more about rhe rest of the world.' - Financial Times `A unique achievement and a great one. The planning, organisation and execution of the project are alike masterly ... the task could hardly have been better performed ... the Encyclopedia offers riches ... comprehensiveness is here truly achieved. There is something in this Encyclopedia for everyone for whom the word `philosophy' has any resonance: the ardent amateur, the dilettante, the beginning student, the aspirant teacher, the seasoned professional.' - The Observer `The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy surpasses in range all previous attempts ... Learning, reasoning, rigour and diligence are everywhere apparent.' - The Times `Edward Craig ... has exacted a high standard of clarity in exposition and has ... judged nicely how much space to allot to doctrines, ideas and individuals ... a monumental labour rarely laborious to use, always informative to read and diverting to browse ... grandiose.' - Times Literary Supplement `This Encyclopedia comes to us with the highest credentials ... the main entries ... are written to a high intellectual standard and by respected figures ... a work of reference that can be used by anyone ... accessible and useful to non-specialists. Undergraduates will love it ... It will, I am sure, be rewarded with the use it deserves. I wish it every success.' - Spectator 'Edward Craig and Routledge are to be congratulated on a monumental achievement.' - Ray Monk, Times Higher Education Supplement

VA06-22 Georg Simmel, 3-Vols/Set.
  Frisby, David/ 9780415060714/ Price:GBP 280.00

Georg Simmel predicted that he would have no followers after his death. However he is now widely recognized as the father of the sociology of Modernity. His ideas on the metropolis, consumer culture, social space and aesthetics are at the crux of contemporary debate in sociology. This collection brings together the essential secondary literature on Simmel. It is selected and edited by David Frisby - a scholar who has perhaps done more than anyone else to rehabilitate Simmel's reputation in the English speaking world. What emerges is the most concise yet comprehensive view of this astonishingly prescient and penetrating sociologist. The volumes will be of interest to graduate students and anyone with a serious interest in Simmel.

VA06-24 G. W. F. Hegel, 4-Vols/Set.
  Stern, Robert/ 9780415020039/ Price:GBP 1250.00

G.W.F. Hegel(1770-1831), arguably the greatest philosopher of the nineteenth century, decisively influenced the direction of all subsequent European thought. Variously understood as a theist and an atheist, a conservative and a liberal, an essentialist and a proto-existentialist, a rationalist and an irrationalist, the ambiguities of Hegel's position mean that `interpreting Hegel means taking a stand on all the philosophical, political and religious problems of our century'(Merleau-Ponty). This collection of writings on Hegel reflects the many-sided nature of Hegel's reception from 1831 onwards, and also offers critical studies on the full range of his work. The four volumes incorporate the classic readings of Hegel, from both the continental and analytic traditions, and also include the central twentieth century readings of his work. Each volume is provided with a clear and helpful introduction which sets the articles in their historical context and highlights the central philosophical issues that they raise.
