Abstract : Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is widely recognized as a leading figure in the Western tradition of philosophy. Especially well known are his seminal contributions to existentialism, philosophy of religion, and cultural criticism. His novel experiments with pseudonymy, irony, satire, allegory and self-erasure have influenced the development of various strands of 'post-structuralist' and 'post-modern' thought in the twentieth century. The secondary literature devoted to his thought is consequently distributed across a number of academic disciplines, including philosophy, literature, religion, political theory and history.
These volumes are designed to allow current debates on key themes to be followed through in depth without having to seek additional sources, while giving readers an appreciation of the diversity of philosophical approaches and interpretive strategies which characterize recent Kierkegaard scholarship.

Abstract : John Rawls (1921-2002) is, arguably, the most important political philosopher of our time. It is commonly observed that the publication in 1971 of his treatise A Theory of Justice initiated a return to political questions among Anglo-American philosophers and is largely responsible for the vigorous health of contemporary political philosophy. Rawls' ideas and approach have transformed philosophical inquiry in this area, and political theorists nowadays are obliged to make clear where they stand in relation to Rawls if they wish to be involved in mainstream discussions.
Yet Rawls' influence has also extended beyond philosophy and has had a substantial impact on work in law, economics, and political science. Since the publication of A Theory of Justice, Rawls has written two other major works: Political Liberalism (1993) and The Law of Peoples (1999) and also issued a collection of his essays: Collected Papers (1999).

- Philosophy: this volume looks at how Rorty's contribution to the analytic tradition was assessed by his peers at the time and then examines how his later, more explicitly post-analytic, writings relate to traditional philosophical topics such as `truth' and `realism'.
- Post-Analytic Pragmatism: Volume Two examines Rorty's `post-analytic pragmatism'. Abstract : This four volume set is a collection of some of the most significant scholarship published on the philosophy of Socrates in the last half century. The contributors include many of the most prominent scholars in this field. As the growth in Socratic studies in the past three decades is due in large part to the influential work of Gregory Vlastos, articles by him figure prominently in the collection, and works by other authors are generally related to his work (as sources of it, responses to it, or further developments of it).
The volumes deal with different areas of Socratic thought. The first volume begins with the question whether and to what degree we can discern a distinctive philosophy of Socrates in the ancient sources. The second volume deals with the trial of Socrates and the philosophical issues that arise from it. The third volume considers the philosophical methodology of Socrates and the fourth his moral philosophy.
This collection shares some material with earlier collections on the philosophy of Socrates, but it is more extensive and up-to-date. Unlike other collections, which may offer the reader only a single article on a given topic, this collection offers a conversation in-depth. Abstract : G.W.F. Hegel(1770-1831), arguably the greatest philosopher of the nineteenth century, decisively influenced the direction of all subsequent European thought. They ask what it is to be a body or a mind, and what the relation between body and mind might be; they ask what freedom consists in, and whether freedom is possible; they ask about the nature and possibility of causation, change, and the passage of time; they try to figure out what it takes to be a law of nature and whether the laws of nature might be necessary or contingent; and so on.
This four-volume collection will gather together many of the most important classic and contemporary writings on these and other central topics in metaphysics. Unlike some of the other collections in this series, the classic writings will not occupy their own volume (or even their own section); rather, they will be sprinkled throughout as appropriate to the topics under consideration. Abstract : Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) has been hailed by many as the greatest French thinker of the twentieth century. As one of the founding members of the existentialist movement in the 1940s, he played a key role in introducing the work of Husserl and Heidegger into French thought and collaborated with Jean-Paul Sartre in the founding of Les Temps Modernes. His later work laid the foundation for the development of French thought in the direction of post-structuralism and post-modernism.

Merleau-Ponty: Critical Assessments of Leading Philosophers gathers together the best critical writing on Merleau-Ponty¡¦s work from the last half century. The collection includes early reviews of his work and the reactions of his contemporaries both during and after his life. Abstract : This biographical dictionary of Irish philosophers is a by-product of a series of larger biographical dictionaries of British philosophers published in recent years by Thoemmes Press. The first of these larger dictionaries was the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers (1999), followed in subsequent years by equivalent works on seventeenth and nineteenth-century British philosophers. Each of these dictionaries included Irish-born philosophers who were considered British not only because of the political links that had been forged historically between Britain and Ireland but also because of the dual or hybrid nationality of those who belonged to the Anglo-Irish ascendancy.

It was partly because of the problems that surrounded the inclusion of Irish entries in the existing 'British' dictionaries that the need for a special dictionary dedicated to Irish philosophers was recognized. This dictionary will include many of those who have already appeared in the 'British' dictionaries, but also many who have been left out of the existing dictionaries, either because they were too early to be included in the seventeenth-century dictionary, or too late to be included in the nineteenth-century dictionary, or simply because their obscurity was such that they had not come to the attention of the editors of the other published dictionaries.

Abstract : This is the first ever complete bibliography of British philosophy in a single source. Covering the period 1870 to the present day, it contains entries on over 600 names, listing not only each author's books, but his or her shorter writings and relevant secondary sources as well. The bibliography is based on John Slater's own collection of books, now at the Thomas Fischer Rare Book Library in Toronto. It is certain to remain the standard reference for decades.

Abstract : The Dutch Republic existed for only some two hundred years, yet in that time it experienced a Golden Age in the arts, in sea trade and in philosophy that left a lasting impression on European culture. The Dutch witnessed nothing less than a philosophical revolution, driven to a large extent by the emigres from France, Finland, Portugal, Britain, Switzerland, Germany and elsewhere that provided the Golden Age with its thinkers.
As a consequence of the unique position of the Netherlands during the period, the Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Dutch Philosophers is at once an anthology of European thought at large. All foreign thinkers are included who exercised a major influence on the philosophical life of the Dutch Republic and who developed their ideas through interaction with other philosophers residing here. On these grounds, Rene Descartes and Pierre Bayle, for example, are included. Other foreign thinkers are included who at least temporarily lived in the country and whose work was influenced by their stay, such as John Locke. Furthermore, the subject matter has not been restricted to philosophy but takes in, for example, theology, science and law. In addition, the dictionary features entries on Dutch universities and city academies, and publishing houses and journals. It is also planned to include maps, portraits and title-page facsimiles.

This is the first comprehensive biographical reference work to document this important era. It will prove indispensable to all students and scholars of the period.

Abstract : Cambridge pragmatism was recognizably different from the instrumentalism of Dewey's Chicago school. Until James's death in 1910, commentators on pragmatism typically either wrote about James's pragmatism or Dewey's instrumentalism, but not both. Only until the 1910s did many philosophers begin to treat pragmatism as a fairly unified set of doctrines. This change in standpoint is reflected in the organization of the sets and volumes. This first set only contains writings about Peirce, James, or other Cambridge pragmatists. Writings on pragmatism in general, which began to make more frequent appearance after 1910, will be collected in another set, Critical Studies on Pragmatism.

Abstract : There has been a long tradition of interest in philosophy in the Islamic world, and it is the aim of these volumes to represent the lives of some of the major thinkers within this tradition. The notion of philosophy has been interpreted broadly to include a large number of intellectuals who were interested in conceptual issues that either directly relate to philosophy or form part of the background of Islamic philosophy as a whole. Included are details about the lives of significant legal thinkers, theologians, political thinkers and even geographers where their lives are relevant indicators of the progress of philosophy in the Islamic world.

Abstract : The Continuum Encyclopedia of British Philosophy employs a wide construal of 'philosophy' that was common in former centuries. Its biographical entries include writers on mainstream philosophical topics whose individual contribution was small (for example, writers of textbooks or minor critics of major figures) as well as celebrated figures from other intellectual domains (e.g. poets, mathematicians, scientists and clergymen) who had something to say on topics that count as broadly philosophical.

Under the general editorship of Anthony Grayling and Andrew Pyle, The Continuum Encyclopedia of British Philosophy contains around 2,500 entries newly written by more than 500 contributors from many countries, including 130 from North America. Abstract : This is a unique and significant new reference work, which reflects the shifting intellectual boundaries of British Thought between 1860 and 1920. Often regarded as an aberrant phase in the history of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century philosophy, British Idealism provoked a wide range of attacks and replies from all the major figures of the time, such as Sidgwick, Dewey, Broad, and of course, Russell.

Some of the major figures which were associated with the movements were Bosanquet, F.H. Bradley, Edward Caird, Collingwood, T.H. Green, Hobhouse, McTaggart, Muirhead, Ritchie and Stirling. Abstract : Today, John Locke is recognized as one of the most important and formative philosophical influences on the modern world. His imprint is still felt in political and legal thought, in educational theory, moral theory and in the theory of knowledge.

Locke's key works, Two Treatises of Government, and the monumental An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, provoked lively debate when they were first published in 1690 and remain standard texts in undergraduate philosophy courses throughout the English-speaking world and beyond. Abstract : Over the last three decades there has been a tremendous amount of philosophical work in the Anglo-American tradition on the cluster of topics pertaining to Free Will. Of course, this work has in many instances built on and extended the historical treatments of this great area of philosophical interest. Abstract : Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) taught at the University of Jena for thirty years, scarcely known outside a small circle of professional mathematicians and philosophers. However, later in the twentieth century he came to be recognized as someone who, in demonstrating the affinity of logic with mathematics, laid the foundations for modern philosophy of language and modern logic.
Frege regarded logic as the foundation for philosophy. In so doing he instigated a radical change in the stance of the majority of Western philosophers whose main pre-occupation had been with the nature of logic rather than logic. Abstract : Phenomenology as a tradition owes its name to Edmund Husserl, in his Logical Investigations (1900-1). It began as a bold new way of doing philosophy, an attempt to bring it back from abstract metaphysical speculation and empty logical calculation in order to come into contact with concrete living experience. As formulated by Husserl, Phenomenology is the investitgation of the structures of consciousness that enable consciousness to refer to objects outside itself. It soon broadened into a world-wide and now century-old tradition.
Phenomenological versions of theology, sociology, psychology, psychiatry and literary criticism have all been engendered, so that phenomenology remains one of the most important traditions of contemporary philosophy. Phenomenology is currently extending into new areas such as gender, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and ecology. An effort has been made in these four volumes to include representatives of all the major tendencies within phenomenology and to provide documentation of the critical discussion of its central topics.

Abstract : Born in Austria, Karl Popper (1902-1994) was one of the dominant philosophical thinkers of the 20th century. A ground-breaking thinker, he saw the essence of true science as being the readiness to submit theories to severe testing and to reject them when refuted by test. His first major book in 1935, The Logic of Scientific Discovery, marked him as a major analyst of science and was to have an enormous influence on the way people, including major scientists, came to think about the field.
This collection is a timely assessment of the reactions to and abiding influence of Popper's work and the controversy it caused across many academic and political fields.
