Mathematical modelling is an important part of nuclear medicine. Therefore, several chapters of this book have been dedicated towards describing this topic. In these chapters, an emphasis has been put on describing the mathematical modelling of the radiation transport of photons and electrons, as well as on the transportation of radiopharmaceuticals between different organs and compartments. It also includes computer models of patient dosimetry. Two chapters of this book are devoted towards introducing the concept of biostatistics and radiobiology. These chapters are followed by chapters detailing dosimetry procedures commonly used in the context of diagnostic imaging, as well as patient-specific dosimetry for radiotherapy treatments.

For safety reasons, many of the methods used in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging are tightly regulated. Therefore, this volume also highlights the basic principles for radiation protection. It discusses the process of how guidelines and regulations aimed at minimizing radiation exposure are determined and implemented by international organisations. Finally, this book describes how different dosimetry methods may be utilized depending on the intended target, including whole-body or organ-specific imaging, as well as small-scale to cellular dosimetry.

This state-of-the-art handbook, the third and final in a series that provides medical physicists with a comprehensive overview into the field of nuclear medicine, focuses on highlighting the production and application of radiopharmaceuticals. With this, the book also describes the chemical composition of these compounds, as well as some of the main clinical applications where radiopharmaceuticals may be used.

Following an introduction to the field of radiopharmacy, three chapters in this book are dedicated towards in-depth descriptions of common radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals used during diagnostic studies utilizing planar/Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging, in addition to during Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging, and, finally, radiotherapy. These chapters are followed by those describing procedures relating to quality control and manufacturing (good manufacturing practices) also encompassing aspects such as environmental compliance. Furthermore, this volume illustrates how facilities handling these chemicals should be designed to comply with set regulations.

Like many pharmaceuticals, the development of radiopharmaceuticals relies heavily on the use of mouse models. Thus, the translation of radiopharmaceuticals (i.e., the process undertaken to assure that the functionality and safety of a newly developed drug is maintained also in a human context), is covered in a later chapter. This is followed by a chapter emphasising the importance of safe waste disposal and how to assure that these procedures meet the requirements set for the disposal of hazardous waste.

This book describes a research project of which the goal was to develop a patient-friendly technique which could also deliver an accurate estimate of the whole-body activity of 177Lu. The practice used to date – a system based on urine collection by the patient – has proved not only to be inaccurate, but also unacceptable for some patients. It also represents an a potentially harmful increase in the risk to the medical staff involved of exposure to radioactive substances. Two alternative methods were developed with the potential to overcome the drawbacks of the urine collection method: (i) direct measurement of the activity in the excreted urine and (ii) direct measurement of the remaining activity in the whole-body using external detectors.

SM32-411 Radiological Anatomy for the FRCR Part 1.(文景書局)

The anatomy examination lasts for 75 minutes and incorporates 20 separate images (cases) with 5 questions per case, producing a total of 100 questions. The cases will be presented at computer work-stations, with separate written answer sheets for completion. In this book we present 5 complete ‘mock’ anatomy examinations, with a total of 500 questions. We have stayed true to the lay out of the RCR sample questions and answer sheets to ensure familiarity.

The anatomical structures should not be ambiguous and, if necessary, there will be more than one arrow to indicate the appropriate structure (a concept that has been included in some of the example questions in this book). As a rule, the candidate should make an attempt to answer ALL questions in the exam as there is no negative marking. It is advised that answers be as complete as possible, for instance the use of ‘left’ or ‘right’ if this can be derived from the image, or rather than simply stating ‘acromion’, use the ‘acromion process of the scapula’ – if you have the knowledge, use it!

This book should not be used as a primary revision tool, rather a practice aid to test the candidate against the clock in exam conditions and highlight any areas of weakness or imaging examinations that the candidate may be unfamiliar with. Primary revision is suggested by using traditional anatomy alongside radiology-based anatomy textbooks. It is also necessary to experience everyday radiological investigations, and even more specialist investigations, as essentially any type of radiological image can be used for assessment of anatomical knowledge in this examination.

SM32-405 Clinical Ultrasound.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781848290495 Year: 2011 Price: GBP 35.00
Author: Hoey, Edward
A b s t r a c t

Ultrasound is a demanding speciality requiring an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physics and pathology as well as many hours of practical scanning experience. Trainees are required to attain high levels of competency in a relatively short period of time and ultrasound images play an ever increasing role in the radiology fellowship examinations.

This book has been written to give trainees exposure to a wide range of ultrasound pathologies and has been compiled in a question-and-answer format to aid with exam preparation. In most instances there is a specific answer, but in some a limited differential diagnosis is required. Selected images with typical accompanying case histories are provided and are followed by a labelled image and summary of the salient diagnostic features of that condition. Some ‘hints’ are included to aid with day-to-day practice.

Although specifically aimed at radiology trainees, this series of case reviews will also be useful to sonographers, physicians, medical students and anyone with an interest in ultrasound.

• Fuel consumption, power output and exhaust gas emissions
• State-of-the-art in sensor and actuator technologies
• Achieving target objectives through creative controller stall to controlling rotor vibrations
• Real-time simulation to maximise operating efficiency

Growth in machine operating parameters and user expectations require exacting methods. Emphasis is placed on practical methods related to instrumentation, understanding concepts, interpreting results and obtaining solutions. Analysis as a problem-solving tool is the focus.

Metastasis Imaging: Current Concepts and Future Challenges.(文景書局)

The appearance of metastasis marks a progression to lethal cancer and is the focus of considerable investment in the development of novel therapeutic agents. Assessing the efficacy of such agents in the clinic is traditionally done by means of standard morphological imaging which monitors any changes in tumor size. But increasingly such assessment demands the use of functional imaging methodologies that report on tumor characteristics other than size, such as vascularity, metabolism, glucose uptake etc. This edition of Cancer Biomarkers highlights a number of functional imaging methodologies, both established and in development in preclinical and clinical settings, and documents the utility of some of these techniques in specific clinical applications.

The first half of the book consists of four reviews and articles covering available imaging technologies, dynamic nuclear polarization and new applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The second half of the book is devoted to the role of positron emission tomography (PET), and consists of a comprehensive review of all available PET techniques, followed by two articles focusing on the use of 18FDG PET in colorectal cancer and Hodgkin's lymphoma patients respectively. The book reviews the cellular processes of metastasis, relates them to imaging findings both in vitro and in vivo in clinical studies and highlights the role of some established and some newer techniques in metastasis imaging.

Testing on animals has become standard practice for evaluating the potential efficacy of therapeutic or diagnostic agents. Not only are the overhead costs of such testing extremely high, but subjecting substantial numbers of animals to intensive testing and re-testing raises serious ethical questions and is widely unpopular with the public. This study explores the advantages of combining various analytical methods with mathematical and computer modeling to construct a multifaceted tool for the pre-vivo screening of prospective radiopharmaceuticals. The benefits of such a method lie in cost minimization and the avoidance of the ethical dimension. The 117mSn radionuclide was identified as an ideal pharmacological component for the treatment of bone pain, and two tin-bisphosponate complexes – Sn(II)-APDDMP and Sn(IV)-PEI-MP were chosen for evaluation. This book describes how these complexes were studied using various techniques including; glass electrode potentiometry, blood plasma modeling, observation of 31P spectra in time and tests for adsorption characteristics. Only one minimal biodistribution test in a rodent model proved necessary to confirm the predicted results. This method provides a holistic approach to investigating some of the fundamental issues in the development of radiopharmaceuticals. It allows for adaptation or the inclusion of additional techniques such as cell assays or dissociation kinetic measurements by free-ion selective radiotracer extraction (FISRE) as required, and makes it possible to better understand and predict the behavior of novel drug concepts without the use of costly and unpopular animal models.

A Scintillating GEM Detector for 2D Dose Imaging in Hadron Therapy focuses on a specialized manner for radiotherapy treatment. In radiotherapy, benefit for the patient can be achieved only if the treatment delivered to the patient is realized as planned. In particular, conformal treatments always bear the risk that an uncertainty in the delivered dose distribution may lead to an under dosage of the tumor, and/or over dosage outside the target volume. Therefore, it is mandatory to employ a quality assurance program that covers all steps of the treatment. This includes dosimetric verification of planned dose distributions, usually performed in water equivalent phantoms. This book discusses the phenomenon of hadrontherapy, where one of the problems of currently used two- or three-dimensional dosimeters for pre-treatment verification of those distributions is the energy dependence of their response in high LET radiation beams. The response of these detectors decreases for low particle energies due to saturation. This discussion results in an explanation of an operation principle of a scintillating gas detector based on GEMs and of the light emission. The scintillating GEM detector appears to be a suitable device for verifying dose distributions especially in high LET beams, in which the currently position sensitive detectors present the problem of saturation. However, the light and electric output anomaly found in a proton beam has to be studied again.

Radiology is an indispensable part of clinical medicine and the chest X-ray is the most commonly performed radiographic exam. It is usually recommended as the initial investigation when patients present with complaints of shortness of breath, persistent cough, chest pain or chest injury.

The ability to analyse correctly, evaluate and understand this aspect of conventional radiology is critical for medical students entering their clinical years and for physicians throughout their career.

“Chest X-Ray Made Easy” lives up to its title with clear, concise descriptions and explanations of standard view and special view images. Divided into three sections, it helps the reader identify normal cardiothoracic anatomic structures, recognise radiographic signs of lung pathologies, and correlate physical signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary disease with the chest X-ray images.

In a conveniently user-friendly format, “Chest X-Ray Made Easy” will be an invaluable pocket reference for students and qualified physicians.

Expertise in chest radiology is a must for all clinicians, however little attention is paid to the teaching of this subject. It is difficult to understand chest radiology as one has to make an inference from a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional structure. This book fulfils the need of postgraduate students, internists and pulmonary medicine specialists, and is also simple enough for graduate students who want to understand and learn to interpret chest x-rays.

Both normal and abnormal x-rays are discussed as well as diseases of the airways, lung parenchyma including pulmonary interstitium, mediastinum, pleura and the chest. A brief quiz at the beginning and end of each section helps stimulate the reader and confirm understanding of the principles.
